Farm Bill Update: Senate Limits Debate, House Review Upcoming

On June 6, 2013 the Senate voted 75-22 to limit debate on its version of the 2013 Farm Bill, which leads to a final vote on the passage of the bill on Monday June 10. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) predicts the Senate will pass its version of the 2013 bill on Monday by a substantial bipartisan majority.

Over 200 amendments were filed to the bill, but of these, the Senate has only considered 14 and adopted eight. The vote to limit debate was a result of Senate leaders failing to come to an agreement on which farm bill amendments to consider.

The House will likely review the House Agricultural Committee-passed farm bill the week of June 17.

The current farm bill is an extension of the 2008 Farm Bill; the extension expires on September 30 and Congress seems to be on track to approve a new farm bill before the extension deadline. Many unknowns remain in the path to the new bill and we will continue to keep you updated here at beginningfarmers.org.
