Full Time Apprentice Farm Worker Position at Dinner Bell Farm, Snow Camp, NC – 2017. Immediate opening – year-round position.

We are a new farm with a diversified market garden as well as pasture-raised laying hens and will be adding livestock this year. We are passionate about organic and sustainable practices. John is the full-time farmer and Stephanie is involved evenings and weekends (on staff at Carolina Farm Stewardship Association). The farm is just 10 minutes from Saxapahaw, 30 minutes from Carborro/Chapel Hill, and 50 minutes from Raleigh/Durham.

Apprentice Farm Worker Position Description

The position provides an excellent opportunity to learn about organic and sustainable agriculture and small farm management through hands-on experience with all aspects of a beginning farm and open sharing of all plans, processes and decision making. Activities in the garden will include soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, processing vegetables, and learning drip irrigation, soil fertility, cover crop utilization, integrated pest management, and season extension.  Activities with the poultry and livestock (plans this year to include grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork) will include pasture movement and feed/water management, collecting and washing eggs, and all aspects of pasture-raised systems. You will learn how to operate farm machinery, use equipment and various tools, build necessary infrastructure and food handling and safety. Sales and marketing activities include processing and packing vegetables and assisting with farmers market, CSA, and wholesale markets.

Apprentice Farm Worker Position Qualifications

We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, enjoys working outdoors with a team to achieve goals day in and day out, and is passionate about organic and sustainable farming. Farming or related experience is preferred but not required. A willingness to take on almost any farm task with a smile, sense of humor, and an open mind are mandatory. A candidate with an eagerness to learn, attention to detail, positive attitude, curiosity and enjoyment of problem solving will find the most satisfaction. You must be physically fit (able to do physical work all day and lift at least 50 lb. bags), energetic, and willing to work in all types of weather. No tobacco or drug use.

Salary/Compensation

Compensation is a monthly stipend and shared-worker housing on-farm (private bedroom, shared kitchen/living/bath, internet access).  Daily farm lunch, access to produce and eggs. Intentional program of teaching/learning. Potential for developing your own small enterprise.
