Part Time Farm Hand Job in Accomac, Virginia at Perennial Roots Farm

Compensation: $8-$12 an hour, depending on experience.

Part-time, 20-30 hours per week, with the potential to grow into a full-time job. This position is year-round and we prefer a minimum two year commitment. There will also be an opportunity to work additional hours at farmer’s markets from May – November.

Perennial Roots Farm is a 50 acre biodynamic farm on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. We raise heritage breed sheep and hogs for meat, as well as geese, ducks, turkeys and chickens. We specialize in heirloom vegetable and heritage breed meats. Our goals and practices are a synthesis of biodynamic rhythms and principles of permanent agriculture. We are committed not only to nominal “sustainable” practices, but to regenerative practices that increase fertility with every season. We use intensive multi-species rotational grazing which keeps our animals healthier and nurtures our soil. We use cover crops to enliven the soil, build carbon, and provide habitat for beneficial insects. We compost as much as we can. Even the weeds are all an integral part of this process of healing the Earth. We grow exclusively non-GMO open pollinated heirloom plants and raise heritage breed pigs, sheep, geese, ducks, chickens, rabbits, and turkeys. Most of our vegetables and animals that we raise are listed on the Slow Food Ark of Taste for their unique history and superior flavor. Most of the animals we raise are part of an effort to preserve the genetic heritage of heritage breeds listed as “at risk” or “critical” by the Livestock Conservancy.

Perennial Roots Farm seeking an honest and self-motivated individual with at least two seasons growing vegetables on an organic (preferably biodynamic) farm. Knowledge and experience with livestock is a major plus. Work would include pasture management, managing and moving livestock, greenhouse work, weeding, mulching, transplanting, bed prep, tractor work, mowing, vegetable and fruit production, orchard care, irrigation, equipment maintenance and more. Potential applicants should be fit, able to lift 50+ pounds over their shoulders and have no problem working in adverse weather conditions.
