Assistant Farmer Position in Maine

Farm Field PhotoAssistant farmer position/Journey person sought for central Maine farm for 2015

We are a 40 acre certified organic, established farm of 9 years, with a 50 member csa and full service farmstand with certified kitchen. Our farm is protected through Maine Farmland Trust as a “Forever Farm” for the past 2 years. We are a vegetable and flower farm with Romney sheep for wool. We raise Turkeys and meat birds once yearly, and a small flock of chickens for eggs. We are horse and oxen powered, with a team of haflingers and milking short horns. I farm with my 3 children ages 9, 14 and 19 all are an intricate part of the farming.

We are looking for a 2nd year or beyond apprentice or journey person, to assist in farming this beautiful, well established successful farm. We have less then 1 ½ acres in production of cut flowers and vegetables, including 2 hi tunnels. The farmer/owner is a master flower designer of over 30 years, the farm host’s weddings and we do off site events for flowers. Our farm is community-based with work-share members, and active support from neighbors, schools and civic groups, who often use the farm as a part of there curriculums.

The farm family is looking to relieve some pressure of farming, off of the one person owner, so the farm can continue to grow in other areas. As the children are growing up and moving on. We are hoping for a 3 year commitment, that offers the opportunity to experience planning, cultivation, harvesting and so much more. Your position would allow you to over see a beginning apprentice that would be there to help you for the season. You would be managing the production of vegetables and flowers, under the daily guidance of the owner/farmer with more responsibility given each year that you are here. You would attend 2 farmers markets weekly, your own vehicle is needed for this.

We would offer you free room and board,

Compensation through possible markets to sell some of the vegetables, such as the farmstand and farmers markets,

We need you to supply references that we will check, to support that you have at least 1 full year of a growing season as experience.

No couples please

6-month minimum stay, but march – October is preferred

We would supply the seed and amendments for the growing season, and the tools. Everything you’ll need. You provide the drive, the ambition that way down feeling that says you want to be a farmer.
