Educational Garden Internship available at Hawthorne Valley Farm Place Based Learning Center

Come join the Place Based Learning Center at Hawthorne Valley Farm with an Educational Garden Internship! Experience our diversified bio-dynamic dairy farm in Upstate NY, while guiding children through hands-on farm based activities. Our program offers week-long residential Waldorf-based immersion experience to students from grades 3 through 10 from both Waldorf and private schools and a summer camp.  The rhythms of nature and farm life take children beyond the classroom. Awakening to the environment, children rediscover the joys of learning and working together. 

The Garden Intern and a full-time Program Manager are responsible for all aspects of our ¼ acre children’s garden.  This intern’s main focus is to lead farm-based learning activities in the garden with children ages 8 to 16 and to perform daily maintenance of the garden.  During the year on an as needed basis, this position will also help fellow interns/counselors with various children activities such as animal feeding, cooking, riding horses, exploring our woods. This internship is a meaningful way to gain knowledge and insight about Waldorf education, biodynamic agriculture and residential education. Compensation includes room and board. Interns are assigned private or shared rooms in the Main House. All organic mostly vegetarian meals are provided.  Stipend is $850 per month.  If you are at least 21 years of age, enjoy working with children, have a love of gardening, animals and farm life, consider joining us! The dates of the Educational Garden Internship are 1/16/18 to 11/16/2018.  Start date can be flexible for the right candidate.

Responsibilities:

-Lead garden activities on a daily basis with groups of 6 to 9 children.

-Maintenance of the Children’s garden

-On an as needed basis lead various program related hands-on activities

-Share daily and weekend animal care and periodic weekend programming.

Desired Qualifications:

-Experience working with children in a garden/outdoor setting and leading hands-on activities

-Experience and knowledge of garden maintenance, preferably biodynamic principles

-Strong communication and organizational skills.

-Ability to live on campus in shared living quarters

-The ability to lift and carry 50 lbs

-Practical knowledge of farming and interest in Waldorf education and biodynamic agriculture is a plus

-Age of 21 or older
