Beautiful HoophouseCSA Farm in Wisconsin Seeks 3 Apprentices for 2013  Burning River Farm is located 3 miles east of the town of Frederic in Western Wisconsin. The farm is Certified Naturally Grown and may be Certified Organic in 2013. This will be the 8th season for the farm at the Mill City Farmers Market in Minneapolis and 7th season growing for our 200+ CSA members. They grow a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and some fruit using only natural, chemical free methods. They use tractors to cultivate when possible and have a strong focus on soil building. Apprentices wanted from April-October, 2013. Educational Opportunities: They look at this as employment on the farm. Thus, thorough on farm training is provided. Each crew member is responsible for different areas of production throughout the season (weed control, tillage, planting as well as other delegations). Training is provided for the use of tractors and implements. Most education comes from participating wholeheartedly in the daily grind, attending markets and gaining real world experience on a successful farm. They encourage open conversations about the what‘s and why’s of farming. Internship Details: The full time farm crew is the backbone of the farm. On the farm you will gain real world experience, but you have to be willing to produce real world results. These positions are ideal for individuals who are interested in farming and not afraid of hard work, getting dirty and being focused. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: greenhouse production, transplanting, tillage, cultivation, weeding and harvest, and cleaning and packing produce for a 200+ member CSA and farmers markets. Other responsibilities may include delivery driving, customer service at farmers market, building projects, etc. Farm crew members work 40-50 hours per week M-F, including some Saturdays. Compensation includes a starting wage of $7.25/hour, housing provided off farm at low rent (taken out of paycheck), available farm produce as well as a few other food staples and many farm lunches. This position requires a full season commitment. Applicants must be willing to perform physical work on and ongoing basis and have a desire to be efficient and create positive outcomes with each task. Although there is a great variation in farming, many tasks are monotonous and physically demanding. A positive attitude is a must. Good listening skills and self motivation are key. Good references are required.

Skills Desired: Experience preferred but not required. Required are a good work ethic, creativity, and openness to learning from experience, desire to work efficiently, and ability to adapt. Manual labor experience is a plus.

Minimum Length of Stay: 6- 7 months

Stipend: Hourly starting rate: $7.25.

Housing: They have housing at very low rent in the town of Frederic, 3 miles from the farm. This house is modern and comfortable. It is close to the library, biking trails, and downtown Frederic. Each employee has a private room. The house has 2 bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Crew members will be responsible for keeping the house clean and doing yard work. Meals: Vegetables from the farm and some staples are provided. Crew members are generally responsible for their own meals, but they often will prepare lunch for workdays.
