They are seeking energetic, committed farmers-to-be, and in exchange for hard work and patience they will help you to understand the methods and techniques necessary to run a productive, profitable and biologically diverse farm. And how to have fun while doing it! Burge Organic Farm is committed to using 'beyond organic' techniques to grow food including cover cropping, soil conservation, composting, crop rotation and biological habitat establishment. Burge Organic Farm is located on a 1000 acre plantation estate that has been in the same family since 1809. The farm is comprised of 16 acres (which includes a 3 acre orchard and seven large high tunnels) that are certified USDA Organic. The property also is host to a private quail hunting operation, wedding facilities, cabins and a full-time culinary staff. Although the farm has been in production for more than 7 years, this is the fourth year of production under full-time management, and 2013 will mark a dramatic increase in production. They will be adding more beehives, more hoop houses, shitake mushrooms, and chickens to the farm this year. They will also focus on expanding food preservation and value-added programs; a passion for cooking and/or some culinary experience is would be a plus.
