Job – Community Garden Organizer, New York

Capital District Community Gardens in Troy New York is offering a Community Garden Organizer Job for 2013, 2014

Capital Region (Albany, Troy, Schenectady), New York. Capital District Community Gardens works to reduce the impact of poor nutrition on public health in New York’s Capital Region by organizing community gardens, providing healthy food access, offering nutritional and horticultural education for all ages and coordinating urban greening programs in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and southern Saratoga Counties.

The Garden Organizer provides direct assistance to CDCG community gardeners and hands-on oversight of CDCG’s 49 community garden sites. Bachelor’s Degree is required.  Experience and/or interest in gardening is preferred.  Successful candidate will be a self-starter, high energy and enjoy working outdoors and independently.  Must enjoy working with a diverse group of people and have strong organizational skills.  Good computer and writing skills are a big plus.  Commitment to the mission of CDCG.   (See website at www.cdcg.org )

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Outreach and Education: 1) Work with gardeners to ensure that each plot is effectively utilized & maintained through the year; 2) Communicate regularly with each site’s garden coordinator; 3)Outreach to various groups to encourage participation in a community garden 4) Register gardeners for their plots each year and conduct orientation meetings for new participants; 5) Organize and participate in work parties for each site twice a year: 6) Coordinate mini cleanup days for gardeners throughout the season; 7)Assist gardeners throughout the season with gardening education and problem solving of all kinds.

 Site Work: 1) Lead the preparation of each site in the Spring, including tilling and staking plots; 2) Conduct garden inspections during the season; 3) Contact gardeners as needed and follow up when necessary; 4) Perform regular garden maintenance functions and assist with organizational landscaping projects; 5) With direction from the Program Manager and Executive Director, develop new garden sites.

 Leadership: 1) Coordinate with staff, city employees, volunteers and others to prepare, improve and develop sites; 2) Recruit, organize and supervise volunteers and interns to assist with projects on an on-going basis.

Administration: 1) Keep accurate records for all matters connected with the gardening program; 2) Solicit in-kind donations from businesses and acknowledge contributions when received; 3) Assist other staff with various projects as needed.

SALARY & BENEFITS: This position is a full-time year-round position, paid on an hourly basis ($10/hour) with a minimum work week of 40 hours.
