Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo Executive Director Job Description

Grassroots Gardens is a non-for profit agency dedicated to the planning, creation and sustainability of community and public gardens through strategic partnerships.  We are looking for candidates that are committed to our Mission: “Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo is a community gardening program in Western New York working with public and private sectors to revitalize neighborhoods and build quality of life through the reuse and beautification of vacant land.”
The Executive Director will serve as a liaison with the community and
civic leaders to reinforce our current programs and develop new
avenues for service.  He or she will be responsible for making sure
that the organization is on strong fiscal grounds as well as
overseeing other staff members.  We are looking for applicants that
possess good character as well as the following skills:

O      Strong organizational and management skills, including excellent follow-through

O      Desire and ability to work both as part of a team and individually

O      Proven ability to work in a culturally diverse environment

O      Experience in coordinating and leading teams

O      Volunteer management experience

O      Ability to have open lines of communication with the board

O      Willingness to see projects through from developing, implementing and evaluating

O      Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously

O      Comfort in use of computers and technology on a daily basis familiarity with blogging and website management

preferred

O      Willingness to adapt to changing organizational conditions and limited resources

O      Creativity, flexibility, resourcefulness and positive thinking

O      Ability to represent the organization to community groups, other organizations, & businesses

O      Proven ability to write for, and receive, grant funding

O      Ability to develop and implement a fund raising strategy

O      Development of marketing materials to aid in fund raising and general outreach is a must

O      A good understanding of gardening in an urban setting

O      Ability to work with city officials to develop policy proposals and follow through with the

legislative process

O      Comfortable speaking in community forums and facilitating relationships among various sectors

O      Create an organizing strategy to get more involvement, and volunteers engaged in community gardening

O      Preference will be giving to candidates with familiarity in City of Buffalo local government and civic institutions

O       Interest in making Buffalo a better place to live, work and play!

O       Other duties as assigned.

O       A good sense of humor

-This is an exempt position, flexible schedule, typically M-F 8:30-5:00 and some evenings and weekends

-The Executive Director will report directly to the Board of Directors

-Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture and/or Urban Planning/Design or related field, master’s degree preferred

-Salary commensurate with experience
