Permaculture is used by millions of people in over 150 countries to design sustainable habitats that integrate humans into their ecosystems. Biodynamics is widely practiced in North America, Europe, and Australia and promotes an understanding of the “dynamic” life forces at work in nature to create agricultural systems that bring about balance and healing. Where do these powerful systems overlap in the world? What are their similarities, their differences?

This one-day workshop will explore principles, practices, goals and methods of biodynamics and permaculture. We’ll clearly define and demystify the language of each system, building a foundational, holistic understanding, while discovering and seeking deeper truths.

The workshop will include a mix of presentations, discussions, and artistic activities to enhance participant learning. Join us to deepen your ability to connect with and heal the earth!

Megan Durney, Head Gardener at the Pfeiffer Center, came to the Pfeiffer Center as an intern in 2006. She currently helps supervise production and sales of Pfeiffer Center produce, cares for the Pfeiffer Center’s apiary, and conducts educational programs for adults and children. Megan is a graduate of the North American Biodynamic Apprenticeship Program.

Ethan Roland, Principal and Lead Designer at AppleSeed Permaculture, is an international expert in sustainable agriculture and permaculture based in the Hudson River valley. He studies and practices regenerative design in all corners of the world, from the wild apple forests of Kazakhstan to the tropical monsoon ecosystems of Thailand. style="color: #ff0000;">Wednesday, May 11th from 6-9 PM – Cottage Food Industry: Make Money Selling Your Home Made Foods A Class in the Permaculture Design Series
Recently passed amendments to the Food Law of 2000 define a cottage food operation as one where a person produces or packages non-potentially hazardous food in a kitchen of that person’s primary domestic residence. The law allows sales of allowable foods produced by a cottage food operation to homes, farm markets, roadside stands, municipal farmers markets, county fairs, celebrations, festivals and other events. Learn how to set up your own cottage based industry and how the concept relates to the Permaculture concept. Examine what foods are allowable for sale, the requirements for labels and listings, sales records, and learn how to plug into the network of existing cottage food operations.
Wednesday, May 18th from 6-9 PM – Permaculture: An Introduction Sustainable Community Solutions
Permaculture is a design methodology for making the sustainable transition to an energy and resource conscious future. Permaculture design goes beyond “green” concepts by utilizing an integrated, umbrella approach to community design decisions. It seeks to create environmentally and economically viable communities by focusing on energy, economic, agricultural and transportation challenges and ways to transition to sustainably designed systems. Learn the fundamental concepts of permaculture design. Examine energy, food, water and waste strategies and how these relate to the larger community. Gain hands-on tools you need to begin considering the concepts of permaculture design in all that you do and in your community.
Did you know that by utilizing simple design and inexpensive systems, we can enjoy a bountiful harvest throughout the snowiest months of winter? Learn about four seasons growing in Michigan in this workshop from the Permaculture Design Series. Permaculture is a design methodology for the sustainable transition to an energy and resource conscious future. It focuses on permanent agriculture solutions, where food production occurs much closer to home and environmental balance is restored. Permaculture systems create environmentally sound, economically viable communities that thrive with nature. Through enriching real life examples and hands on demonstrations, participants will leave knowing how to plant, grow, maintain and harvest abundant organic edibles in their own home, with Permaculture designed systems, throughout the Michigan year.
Song of the Morning Ranch will be hosting a permaculture workshop featuring Permaculture Design Course instructor Wayne Weiseman on the weekend of April 29-May 1.

Join us for this three-day Introduction to Permaculture, which will involve a combination of classroom instruction and field experience that will help us view our respective landscapes, at Song of the Morning and elsewhere, with fresh eyes. Permaculture is a land use and community building movement that strives for the harmonious integration of human dwellings, microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, and water into stable, productive communities – it is an approach that honors spirit in nature. The focus is on the relationships created among these elements and the way we place them in the landscape. Instructor Wayne Weiseman is certified by the Permaculture Institute of Australia as an instructor of the Permaculture Design Certificate Course, which he has taught for many years. Wayne is Director of The Permaculture Project, a full service, international consulting business promoting the ideas of eco-agriculture, renewable energy resources, eco-construction methods, and education. Fee: $250 ($225 on/before April 15). For more information, see <a

Aerial photos and surveys are just a small portion of what you have available. Plugging in all that information to a computer does not have to be tedious. Designing a well thought out plan is fun and easy to adjust with inexpensive software. This workshop will open the data mines of the web to serious Permaculture and Polyculture designers. Basic site assessment, plant databases, aerial imagery, and standard graphic design tools will help you break into the next level of Permaculture design.
This Permaculture design course provides a positive and empowering vision for social and ecological transformation. Come be inspired by the possibilities of today and not by the fear of tomorrow!

Permaculture
•is an ecological design science that provides insights and practical techniques for living a fruitful and abundant life.
•is addressing the major issues of our day from a whole systems perspective.
•is a worldwide movement that is helping to regenerate local ecologies and economies.
•is a solution oriented ecological approach to retrofitting our societies.

This course is perfect for motivated individuals who wish to use the tools of Permaculture in urban and rural environs as well as for modeling sustainable and regenerative businesses.

Lectures, extensive and diverse handouts, field trips and hands-on activities:
Urban redesign and retrofit, passive solar and natural building,inner-city gardening techniques, indoor and apartment gardening, indoor mushroom cultivation, fermented foods, whole foods, Living Machines and natural waste water treatment, niche market and cooperatively owned business ideas, rain gardens, living roofs, rooftop gardens, how to clean polluted air with plants, biogas generators, Bioregionalism and regional self reliance, the economics of globalization, evolution of life on earth, history of agriculture, Biodynamics, natural history of Eastern woodlands, woodlot management, watershed health, the integration of animals into cultivated ecosystems, and so much more!

To receive a certificate students must attend all 11 classes and present a final Permaculture site design. Students will be given the option to present their final design individually which is a different approach than most PDCs. In our experience, and from what our growing number of students say, this contributes to a more practical, professional and intellectually stimulating learning experience. As a result a number of our student’s final presentations have gone from paper (or electronic presentations) to actualized, real-world designs.

All classes will be held on either Saturday or Sunday from 9am to 5pm and will be held at:
Location: Washington

The Guemes and Fidalgo Islands Staple Foods Project is setting up a CSA whose goal is helping transition our community to a less energy intensive future. Our initial focus will be on growing staple crops such as grains, beans and potatoes. We need a farm manager who will be in charge of planting, harvesting and farm operations and work closely with the project initiator. We are starting out with less than 2 acres and should be selling memberships by late winter 2011. The right person for the job will have experience in and be committed to organic methods and permaculture. Enthusiasm is important. This is a unique opportunity to get in on the beginnings of a project that is changing our food system from the bottom up. Call Sequoia (Susan) Ferrel for more information, or email her at ; and bird netting.

Permaculture basics for farms

Permaculture is essentially an ecological approach to growing crops. Permaculture was invented by Bill Mollison in Australia in the early 70s. It has since become a worldwide practice, because it’s a particularly efficient and economic method of growing food. Permaculture involves everything from the use of canopies to creating topsoil out of newspapers.

Permaculture and agriculture

Permaculture uses the principle of mixing plants in mutually beneficial relationships and in accordance with the principles of nature. For a while, this was an “alternative” crop growing method, but it’s becoming progressively more mainstream as the economics of good land use in permaculture are becoming better understood.

Permaculture systems are integrated. The process of integrating crop growth is quite fascinating. It includes principles of agriculture and gardening mixed with fundamental ecology.

For example:

Imagine a simple flat piece of ground. No trees, no grass, just some rather tired looking dirt. Using permaculture principles, you can turn this area into a jungle of food plants. In his famous video “In Danger of Falling Food“, Mollison explains how permaculture was derived from watching natural plant and forest ecosystems develop.

The fact is plants don’t normally grow in monocultures. Even grassland savannahs contain an entire ecology which helps support the growth of the grasses. The idea of permaculture is to create these ecologies to promote the growth of food plants.

In the case of the simple flat piece of ground, the first thing to be done was to create a viable soil ecology. By putting down newspapers, covering them with soil, adding plants, then watering in the plants, and mixing them to ensure a range of biological functions took place in the soil, Mollison was able to produce a virtually instant garden.

In more complex environments, permaculture uses trees, animals, insects and birds for windbreaks, pollination, pest control and providing additional nutrients to further develop the permaculture crops and plants. Permaculture systems can become quite complex, but the basic principles are extremely simple, which makes them useful, cost-efficient options for agriculture.

One of the most important things about permaculture is that it uses every available area for productive purposes. In traditional agriculture using monocultures, that simply isn’t possible. Monoculture harvesting and growing practices effectively exclude a lot of very useful plants that could contribute a lot to both soil fertility and biology.

Another important consideration for agricultural purposes is that permaculture is conducted on a “no waste” basis. Like good industrial design, good agricultural processes generate no waste. In fact, best practice should actually produce extra materials and resources for improved growing processes.

If you’re a farmer, and you’re looking at ways of improving both your range of commercial crops and your property, permaculture is probably your best bet for finding an economical methodology to achieve both purposes. Permaculture methods are viable in any environment, and when introduced into Africa immediately became popular due to the fact that financial outlays were minimal.

This very practical form of economics is a hallmark of permaculture. All permaculture methods and processes are cost-effective, and in most cases all resources can be obtained locally. In effect, permaculture is a sort of “portable” agriculture which can be conducted anywhere, at very low cost and with very high levels of efficiency.

Job: Permaculture Education Director

Education

Employment

Permaculture
<guid
