Sustainable Crop and Livestock Farm

2016 Internship on Sustainable Crop and Livestock Farm in Virginia

Brightwood Vineyard and Farm is a diversified, sustainable crop and livestock farm located in the Northern Piedmont of Virginia 35 miles north of Charlottesville. All of our vegetables, herbs and flowers are certified organic.

Our business focus: Inspiring new farmers and consumers to improve the health of our community through production and appreciation of nutrient-rich food.

Skills Desired: Open mind, desire to learn through doing, attention to detail, curiosity about farming, willingness to work hard.

Internship Details: Interns assist with all aspects of our diversified farm from Plants, Animals, Value Added Products, and People; greeting both B&B guests and customers. Interns participate in planning, planting, field maintenance, harvest, farmers markets, CSA, wholesale and on farm sales. Our staff also helps to prepare for our winter CSA season, as production continues year round but on a more limited scale. Daily chores include regular animal care (sheep, donkeys, goats, chickens, family cow, working livestock guardian dogs). We tailor the experience to the interests of the Interns as much as we can, within the needs of the farm.

Accommodations: Our Interns live in yurts on the farm property. See pictures of the farm on our website http://brightwoodvineyardandfarm.com. Shared bath in lower level of main house. Interns share the kitchen with us and eat in the main house and assist with cooking and cleanup. Everyone is expected to cook for the group at least once a week learning to complete the cycle from field to table.

Stipend: $200 per week, plus meals and accommodation. Work is 5 1/2 days per week, including Saturday farmers Market. Days off are negotiable around the picking schedule. Approximately 50 hours per week. Internship starts the beginning of March, 2016 and ends mid to late November 2016.
