Apprenticeships in Regenerative Agriculture in Quivira’s New Agrarian Program – California, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico – 2017

The Quivira Coalition is a small nonprofit organization based in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Our mission is to build resilience by fostering ecological, economic and social health on western landscapes through education, innovation, collaboration and progressive public and private land stewardship.

Quivira’s New Agrarian Program partners with farmers and ranchers to offer in-residence, hands-on professional development apprenticeships on regenerative, holistically-managed agricultural operations in Colorado, California, Montana and New Mexico. In 2017, we are offering ten in-residence, 8-month long paid apprenticeship opportunities on the following seven host operations: (1) San Juan Ranch, CO – regenerative ranching; (2) James Ranch Artisan Cheese, CO – regenerative dairy and cheese-making; (3) Tooley’s Trees, NM — holistic orchard and tree farm; (4) Ranney Ranch, NM – regenerative ranching; (5) Brett Gray Ranch, CO: regenerative ranching; (6) Cobblestone Ranch, CA: regenerative ranching; (7) Vilicus Farms,MT – organic, diversified grains and legumes.

These apprenticeships are full-time, intensive education & professional training opportunities, 50-60 hours a week, sometimes more and sometimes less. One of the joys as well as the challenges of agriculture is living and working with the rhythm of the seasons, and the work schedule follows the demands of season, weather, plant and animal needs. The New Agrarian Program seeks applicants with a sincere commitment to lives and careers in regenerative agriculture, enough experience to know what it takes to work on the land, and an excellent work ethic.

Compensation includes a monthly stipend, housing, partial board, enrolment in a Holistic Management International 8-month webinar series, and participation in the annual Quivira Coalition conference. Applicants must be ready to commit to the full program in order to be considered.

We are still seeking applications for the following three apprenticeships:

  1. James Ranch Artisan Cheese: application deadline January 1, 2017
  2. Brett Gray Ranch: application deadline January 1, 2017
  3. Vilicus Farms: application deadline January 6, 2017

Initial interviews for top candidates will be scheduled within a week of the application deadline. In-person interviews and overnight visits will be scheduled 2-3 weeks after initial interviews. Start-dates range from March to as late as May, depending on the apprenticeship.
