CSA Farm Apprenticeships in Central NY

Crowdfunding 101 for Beginning Farmers
CSA Farm Apprenticeships at Common Thread in Central New York
Position Description
We seek farmers in training to come learn with us!  Common Thread CSA is a 12 acre vegetable farm in Central New York that grows mixed vegetables for an onsite and delivered CSA, farmers markets and a small amount of wholesale.  We are a family farm run by two farmers with 20 years of experience each who enjoy sharing what we know and learning from you.  Our scale allows motivated apprentices to learn and practice a wide variety of skills. We sign the NOFA NY Farmers Pledge.
We seek individuals who are passionate about farming.  Apprentices learn how the farm works from seed to distribution by participating in greenhouse work, irrigation, transplanting, cultivation, pest control, harvesting, wash and pack, farmers markets, CSA distribution, tractor operations and more.  In addition to hands on training in the fields, we hold weekly education sessions.  Apprentices have the opportunity to learn about soil fertility, crop rotation, business planning, budgeting, marketing, crop planning and more during on-farm workshops as well have have opportunities to take field trips to other farms.
CSA Farm Apprenticeships start in March or April and run through October or November.  Apprentices work between 40 and 50 hours a week.  Compensation includes training, $9.70/hour (more for more experienced apprentices), two paid personal days and produce from the farm.  We have an apartment for rent on the farm for one or two apprentices and will assist apprentices in finding housing locally.
Applicants for the CSA farm apprenticeships should have at least 2 months experience working on a vegetable farm, a strong interest in working and learning on a production CSA farm, ability to work in all weather conditions and be physically able to complete a season of farm work, a valid drivers license and good communication skills.
