General Description: Vernon Valley Farm raises grass-fed beef, pastured pork + poultry, and naturally grown vegetables. We strive to produce fresh, healthy, and flavorful food for our community.

Meals: We will provide access to farm ingredients such as beef, chicken, pork, eggs, and vegetables. Interns can cook together or independently depending on personality and diet.

Skills Desired: Veggie duties include: preparing seed beds, seeding, transplanting, weeding, watering, foliar spraying, trellising, harvesting, washing and packaging vegetables, and working the farmstand.

Animals: moving cattle and fencing, maintaining fence lines, feeding pigs, castrating, ear tags, & maintaining records.

There will be times when the summer interns will be working with volunteers. Strong communication skills are required as well as the ability to work alone or in a group as part of a team.

Clean Driver’s License required. Preference for at least a season of experience on a farm, but a strong interest in farming and developing the skills and discipline in order to be a farmer will suffice.

Most importantly: positive attitude and a strong work ethic.

Educational Opportunities: Between our two managers, there is a tremendous amount of information we can share with our apprentices. We have a strong desire to educate future farmers. Those staying on a full season will be eligible to attend a farming conference and will receive tractor instruction. For those with an interest in pasture systems in particular, we are one of the biggest beef operations in the state and interns will become very familiar with rotational grazing and pasture systems.

Stipend: $500/month with an additional bonus for those who stay with us through the whole season.

Housing: We provide a private bedroom in an old farm house. Bathroom, kitchen, and other common areas are shared. We have WIFI.

Internship Details: Starting in May, interns will be exposed to all aspects of the farming operation, from production to planning and marketing. This position is unique in that you will learn both about vegetable and livestock farming. As the season unfolds, interns will also be exposed compost production and bee-keeping. Our farm has mature Chestnut and Mulberry Trees as well. Property upkeep and maintenance will also be a regular task. Time allowed for personal projects.
