Sprout Creek Farm, a 200 acre dairy farm in Dutchess County and award-winning Creamery is seeking a passionate and skilled, artisan farmstead head-cheesemaker to join its team.  The head Cheesemaker will continue making the Sprout Creek Farm’s line of award-winning proprietary, cow and goat’s milk, cheeses. The operation of two dairies, cow and seasonal goat’s milk, gives head cheesemaker a unique opportunity to research and develop exciting and innovative cheeses and techniques, as well as improve recipes that express the terroir and seasonality of the farm and displays the craftsmanship of artisan farmstead cheese making.    

Artisan Farmstead Cheesemaker Job Location: Sprout Creek Farm in Poughkeepsie, NY

Full Time 40 Hours / week

The ideal candidate in this position is a self- motivated, reliable, detail-oriented, experienced artisan farmstead cheese-maker responsible for the production and quality of our award-winning line of cheeses, managing creamery operations, and its staff in a safe, sanitary, and efficient fashion.  The Artisan Farmstead Head Cheese Maker will report directly to Sprout Creek Farm’s Executive Director.

Artisan Farmstead Cheesemaker Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Production:

  • Follow recipes to produce food products of specified flavor, texture, clarity, bouquet, & color
  • Heads research and development team to explore new recipes and techniques to keep up with modern trends in cheese making
  • Determine production schedule for creamery to prevent any shortfalls in production or products
  • Responsible to develop, train, and enforce safe and proper creamery procedures
  • Manage inventory of production related ingredients and supplies
  • Collaborate with Farm Director to produce ideal milk quality from farm herds for optimal cheese making.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director on creamery budget
  • Participate on cross-functional teams to build a culture of operational excellence and innovation in the areas of processing, methods, productivity, Good Manufacturing Practices, safety and quality
  • Absolute morale fortitude with impeccable ethical standards is a must
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Food Safety:

  • Act as lead for coordination with regulatory agencies (FDA and NYS Ag & Mkts)
  • Check raw ingredients for maturity & stability for processing; check finished products for safety, quality, and, nutritional value
  • Establish a practice to perform routine environmental testing to ensure a pathogen free plant
  • Participate in safety efforts to include, safety meetings, incident investigations, root cause analysis, auditing, and other duties as assigned

Oversee all aspects of cheese production & creamery/market employees

Minimum Experience Required:  3 years food process management, 2-5 years of experience cheese making, and HACCP

Preferred Experience:  2-5 years Artisan Farmstead cheese making and management experience, HACCP Manager certified

Working Conditions:  Indoors with time spent in refrigerated rooms.  Standing, walking, sitting.

ARTISAN FARMSTEAD CHEESEMAKER JOB QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

3 years food process management, 3 years of experience cheese making, and HACCP Manager certified

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

2-5 years artisan farmstead cheese making and management experience, HACCP Manager certified

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  H.S. diploma or equivalent, HACCP certified

PREFERRED EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

A bachelor’s degree in dairy manufacturing, food science, or related field of study.  Concentration in business, chemistry, microbiology, or culinary cheese studies is ideal.

REQUIRED
SKILLS

 USFDA and NYS Ag & Market dairy production regulatory standards, sanitation, lean manufacturing, budget management, team management, and production management, Microsoft Office.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee is frequently required to walk and stand. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
