Land's Sake Farm

Assistant Grower Job at Land’s Sake Farm in Weston, Massachusetts – 2019

For the 2019 season, Land’s Sake Farm in Weston, MA, is looking for an enthusiastic, dependable, hard-working, and humorous person to join our farm and forestry team. The Assistant Grower job is a full time position that will run from around the end of February through the end of October.

Land’s Sake is a nonprofit dedicated to building meaningful connections between people, the food they eat, and the land; programs include environmental, food donation programs, and sustainable land management. Assistant Growers will work closely with the farmers to operate a busy and complex community farm and forestry operation. We cut firewood in town forests, produce maple syrup, grow vegetables for a 300 member CSA program and a very busy farmstand, and grow produce for hunger relief donations. We also occasionally work with volunteers and children in education programs. We strive to make Land’s Sake a welcoming, community-centered farm for all involved, including customers, shareholders, children, volunteers, and staff.

Progressing through the season, Assistant Grower job responsibilities will include:

  • Splitting and stacking firewood
  • Collecting maple sap and assisting with syrup production
  • Greenhouse tasks, such as seeding, watering, and potting on
  • Field work, such as harvesting, planting, and weeding
  • Miscellaneous tasks, such as tomato staking and tying, fencing, and irrigation

This position is scheduled for Monday through Friday until Memorial Day, then shifts to Tuesday through Saturday. The winter work day is 7:30-3:30, with hours increasing as the days get longer and warmer. The summer schedule is 7:00-5:00. There may be occasional exceptions to end times when we need to complete work before a weather event, and there may be times when we cancel work due to hazardous weather.

Applicants for the Assistant Grower job should be enthusiastic about learning, communication, having fun and working hard. Assistant growers are expected to work quickly while maintaining attention to detail. Working efficiently, independently, and with a team are equally important. AGs can expect to work long hours in all weather conditions; a positive attitude and good sense of humor are essential to this position.

Compensation includes:

  • $12.50/hr, with paid lunch
  • Free produce from farm and discounts on farmstand goods

Qualifications include a sincere interest in vegetable, firewood, and maple syrup production, a valid driver’s license and clean driving record, reliable transportation, the ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly, and the ability to work for long periods of time in all weather conditions. Previous farm experience is strongly preferred, but not required.
