Beef Cattle School: You can still register, but the clock is ticking!

(Register here) New Entry Sustainable Farming Project, in cooperation with the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, will be holding its second hands-on Beef Cattle School on Saturday, October 23 at the vet school's campus in North Grafton, Mass. (Directions here) We have a special guest speaker this year: Dr. Robert Smith, one of the top cattle veterinarians in the country, coming to us all the way from Oklahoma! The workshop will build on last year's beginner workshop, but it will be valuable for producers of all levels, offering a variety of new (and some more advanced) topics so that participants in last year's Beef Cattle School will find this year's version just as rewarding. In fact, we're covering so much ground that we had to make the workshop an hour longer!

Topics will include:

  • Buying/selecting/evaluating beef cattle
  • Performance characteristics of different breeds
  • Judging and body scoring
  • Feeds and feeding, nutrition
  • Breeding and crossbreeding
  • AI vs. natural, buying and testing bulls
  • Bull selection (AI) to improve your herd
  • Reproduction:  Calving seasons, synchronization, heat detection,  etc.
  • Health, using veterinary services
  • Welfare
  • Beef quality assurance
  • Handling/moving/restraint; equipment you need/designing the catch
  • Processing the herd (vaccinations, parasite control, fertility exams, etc.)
  • Weighing and record keeping
  • Culling, selecting replacement heifers
  • Preparing for calving (evaluating cows, tools to keep on hand, first aid kit, animal ID)
  • Housing and heat stress
  • … and plenty of time for Q&A

Registration costs $40 ($25 for additional guests) until October 15, when it goes up to $50. Registration closes on October 19, so don’t let it slip your mind – register now by clicking here! You can also find more details at our website.

on other sites? I have a blog centered on the same topics you discuss and would love to have you share some
stories/information. I know my readers would value your
