Bridge City Farm School Accepting Applications

Bridge City Farm School

Attention Aspiring Farmers… Bridge City Farm School is now accepting applications for an eight-month experiential farmer-training program in the Portland Metro Area.

In-depth instruction will help participants understand the nuts and bolts of sustainable, small scale, market farming. We provide 550 hours of field instruction, growing over 40 different crops during the course of the season. Two intensive training days per week (16-20 hours) make this program accessible for those wanting an in-depth farmer training experience in a part time capacity.

Bridge City Farm School trains aspiring farmers how to grow high-quality produce in a smaller space, which could be a double city lot, or on small suburban/ rural acreage. Small class size and consistent days on the farm each week fosters a connection to the land and creates a close knit community setting in which to hone your farming skills. We provide participants with practical knowledge for planning and starting your own small scale-farming project. Weekly field seminars and hands-on learning help students gain a deeper understanding of horticultural and farm management skills including, but not limited to:

  • Soil fertility and management
  • Farm infrastructure
  • Bed Preparation- by hand and with the BCS walk behind tractor
  • Seed propagation and seedling care
  • Crop selection and planning
  • Pest and disease prevention and management
  • Season extension
  • Greenhouse management
  • Weed prevention, identification, and management
  • Irrigation
  • Tool selection and usage
  • Food safety
  • Marketing and farm finance
  • Basic bee keeping
  • Orchard care
  • Poultry care for egg production

Our goal is to provide you with an exceptional learning experience, which translates into one-on-one time in the field with an experienced farmer and educator. In exchange, we are looking for individuals who are dedicated, hard working, and open to learning. No previous gardening or farming experience is required.
