Farm Job or Apprenticeship at Karim Farm and Creamery in Vermont – 2018

Karim Farm and Creamery is a small scale dairy located in Ryegate Vermont, with 54 acres of pastures and hay fields, small maple and apple orchards. We have been a licensed farm and creamery for the past 4 1/2 years: still young but with a defined brand–European-style, artisan hard cheeses, loyal following and expanding markets. We market cheese at farmers markets, local stores and restaurants, and as well as on the farm. and have recently been picked up by a major distributor. We also sell eggs, turkeys and other, diversified products. Work we do includes: raising diary cows, goats, sheep and poultry; pasture development; cheese making; vegetable gardening, fruits, food preserving; small scale carpentry, firewood, and farm maintenance.  For more information visit our website at www.karimfarm.com.

Karim Farm and Creamery is looking for an apprentice or farm worker with an interest in dairying, diversified farming, and cheese making Work is mostly on the farm side: includes: milking, general barn work, and pasture maintenance. We also have a large garden, raise turkeys, chickens, sheep and goats and undertake a number of building and improvement projects every year. We invite apprentices to be involved all of these. There is also the opportunity to learn cheese making and participate in all aspects of an expanding business.  Workers must be able to lift 50 lbs and willing to use chainsaws and other tools.

Workers work side by side with us, as well as taking on responsibilities on their own.  We meet weekly to plan, discuss regularly, and have  a small library of books available. There is a lot of opportunity for learning. All crops and livestock are raised naturally, following organic practices. We also practice humane, naturalistic practices giving our animals as much freedom as possible. We are particularly involved in natural cow health using supplements, homeopathic, light therapy and energy work.

Worker lives with family–private room, shared bath and living spaces. We have no children but do have cats and dogs. Diet is varied, locavore, mostly homegrown–but not vegetarian. Absolutely no smoking, drinking or drugs allowed on premises. The work day and week varies but we make sure there is enough time to pursue other interests.  We pay a stipend based on experience.
