Farm, Build Community, and Earn Credit with PEAS in Montana – 2019

SPEND SUMMER 2019 IN MONTANA AND PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM IN ECOLOGICAL AGRICULTURE AND SOCIETY (PEAS)<https://hs.umt.edu/evst/opportunities/peas/default.php>

Farm, Build Community, and Earn Credit: The University of Montana welcomes students for summer PEAS and earn credits while working on the 10-acre community farm. Past students report that their PEAS experiences were some of the most transformative ever. This great TEDx talk by PEAS founder, Josh Slotnick<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VwxWDVKs8k>, tells the story of this place.

Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled will:

  • Learn about key production techniques to grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables for a CSA and for the Missoula Food Bank.
  • Manage water and irrigate crops in this semi-arid environment.
  • Build community and bond to this beautiful place.
  • Contribute to the needs of all community members, regardless of income.
  • Visit area farms and learn from seasoned growers.
  • Earn upper division or graduate credit.

Summer Weekly Schedule

  • Monday-Thursday the days run from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, then we eat lunch together, from the food we’ve been growing (we take turns cooking, in pairs).
  • On Fridays we have a sit-down class and then go on a field trip to farm in the area.

Registration information for UM students, sign up via Cyberbear for ONE of these:

  *   ENST 396-01S (CRN 50186) – 6 upper-division credits for undergraduates
  *   ENST 590-01S (CRN 50187) – 3 graduate-level credits

We Welcome Students from Other Universities to farm, build community, and earn credit with PEAS

  •  We know students from other states or countries may not be able to come right away or stay until late August, so we can be flexible about arrival and departure dates.
  •  We can provide a syllabus and a letter to your school if you wish to transfer the credits you earn here.
  •  Registration information<https://hs.umt.edu/hs/summer-session/session/special.php> (select “Summer Semester Only Admission Status”)

For more information about housing, UM or transfer credits, curriculum, arrival/departure dates, or other questions, contact caroline.stephens@mso.umt.edu<mailto:caroline.stephens@mso.umt.edu> to learn more about the PEAS program, and how to farm, build community, and earn credit in the summer of 2019.

The PEAS farm is a long-term partnership between the Environmental Studies Program<https://hs.umt.edu/evst/> at UM and the local nonprofit, Garden City Harvest<https://gardencityharvest.org/>.
