Job: Robinette Farms Crew Leader Position The Crew Leader position is the next step beyond an internship for someone interested in running their own farm or managing a farm for someone else.  This position is intended to provide an opportunity to gain experience in decision making, managing people and time, and working on building the skills necessary to start your own farm or manage a farm. Robinette Farms is a diversified small-scale family farm located in Martell, Nebraska, just 15 minutes from the capital city of Lincoln.  They grow over 80 varieties of vegetables on about 5 acres, raise hens for eggs, have a small flock of Katadhin sheep, raise pigs each season and keep honeybees.  Robinette Farms markets their produce and meats to a 125 member Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program, the Old Cheney Road Farmers' Market, and a handful of local restaurants.  All of their goods are grown or raised using organic and sustainable methods, but they are not currently certified organic. Job Description: The role of the Crew Leader is to work directly with the Farmers to coordinate the apprentice and intern farm crew to complete the tasks for each day.  The Crew Leader is responsible for managing and leading the field workers in daily tasks, which requires organizational, managerial and motivational skills.  They are looking for a self motivated individual who desires to take the next step in learning how to start their own farm.  Previous experience as an intern or farm worker is required.  Good communication, the ability to lead, and customer service skills are a must.

Details:

The Crew Leader position begins in March and lasts through November.  The Crew Leader can expect to work anywhere between 30-70 hours per week, fluctuating with the seasons.  This position may be extended and expanded for the right candidate after the first season.

The Crew Leader position is salaried at $12,600, subject to taxes. Workers Compensation is provided, but no other benefits are offered.

Housing is available, and the Crew Leader has access to farm produce, eggs and some meat throughout the season.

Qualifications

They are looking for a reliable, responsible and hardworking individual who is able to follow and give instructions and lead the crew of apprentices, interns and volunteers in daily farm tasks. Applicants must have good communication skills and previous leadership and farming experience.

A minimum of one completed season as an intern (or staff) on a similar farm is required. Previous experience with tractors, farm implements and equipment is ideal.

Applicants must be available to begin work in early March and commit to staying through the growing season, ending just before Thanksgiving.

Excellent people skills, initiative, and the physical ability to work daily with hands, wrists and back, and to lift 50 pounds regularly are required.

The Crew Leader should expect to work outside in all weather conditions including rain, snow and daily summer heat of 90-100 degrees under humid conditions.

A strong desire to farm and live the farming lifestyle is necessary.  The role of the Crew Leader on the farm is to motivate, educate and create a fun but productive environment on the farm!

A valid driver’s license.

They cannot house pets or partners on the farm.

No smoking on the farm. Tobacco carries a virus that kills tomatoes, peppers and other crops!

A vehicle for personal transportation (we are 15 miles from downtown Lincoln).

Robinette Farms Apprenticeship Program

The purpose of our apprenticeship at Robinette Farms is to provide real life training for future small-scale farmers.  Their goal is that interns could leave there and start their own operation at some level.  The apprenticeship requires long hours and hard work on a daily basis, but also provides the experience of learning the ins and outs of farming.  Apprentices will receive in the field training and first hand details of managing a small diversified farm. They are looking for highly motivated people who will work quickly and smartly and who have the drive to learn all they can about starting a small farm.

Job Description

Apprentices work and live on the farm from April through October.  They are looking for hardworking individuals who have strong self motivation and a strong desire to learn about small-scale farming.  Previous experience on a farm is helpful but not required.  Good communication and customer service skills are a must.  They are looking for apprentices that like to work hard and learn through doing.

Apprentices are involved in every aspect of the farm’s operation, from weeding to selling at weekly Farmers’ Markets.  Farming is a lifestyle that requires rigorous work but is also very rewarding.  Apprentices are essential to the successful operation of the farm each season, making it important that they find the right fit for both the apprentice and the farmers.

Details

Apprentices can expect to work anywhere between 40-65 hours per week, fluctuating with the seasons.

Apprentices receive a monthly stipend of $600, subject to taxes.

Housing is provided on farm.  Each apprentice has their own bedroom in the staff farmhouse with shared kitchen, bathroom and living areas.

Apprentices have access to farm produce, eggs and some meat throughout the season.

Once a week, they hold informal mini-classes on various aspects of farming.  Among other things, they discuss details of financial planning, crop planning, planting and greenhouse schedules, animal care, grazing management, equipment use and maintenance, and anything else apprentices express specific interest in.
