Assistant Farm Manager Apprentice Position on Certified Organic Farm in Texas – Fall 2016

Terra Preta Farm is a small family owned and operated certified organic farm located in Edinburg, Texas. The 7-acre farm produces vegetables in field and in high tunnels. We serve a 50 member CSA and a local farmers’ market. Our tropical weather allows us to grow from October thru May. We grow over 30 different varieties of vegetables. In order to provide for our family we need to work full time outside of the farm. We need to hire an employee/intern to keep the farm running efficiently. We need an assistant farm manager apprentice who is passionate about organic farming and improving the soil. We need someone who is committed to the success of the farm. They would benefit by being trained one on one by the farm owner/manager and have the opportunity for full time employment at the end of the apprenticeship.

The apprentice is expected to work side by side with the farm manager/owner through all aspects of farm production from crop planning to market sales. Duties would include planting, weeding, integrated pest management, harvesting, packaging, record keeping, and when needed attending farmers’ market.

Experience is preferred by not necessary. But applicants should be highly motivated and not afraid of hard work and working outside in all weather conditions. Skills needed: ability to follow instructions, observant, organized, outgoing, willing to learn Spanish, ability to lift 30-40lbs, and a strong back. Work schedule varies with farming needs. You will be expected to work 4-5 days a week from 8a-5p with an hour lunch. And sometimes you will need to attend the farmers market on Saturday mornings. Applicants should feel comfortable working in smoke & drug free Christian family environment. Apprenticeship will be from November 2016 to May 2017.  Please plan on providing your own transportation.

Hired Apprentice will have direct access to farm manager and gain experience needed to manage a farming operation. If successful, apprentice will have the opportunity for full time hire and be an influential part of our growing business. You will have access to fresh vegetables when available and the opportunity to learn and practice Spanish. Housing is not available on the farm, but the farm will assist with finding housing in close proximity and provide $200 housing allowance. And you will also receive a stipend of $600 a month.
