Farm Project Apprentices Needed in Texas

Cardo’s Farm Project located in Ponder, Texas is looking for Apprentices for Spring 2013 Cardo’s Farm Project is a community farm and education center serving the Denton Community by growing healthy food in harmony with the natural environment, and providing opportunities for farm-based education. CFP is seeking one long-term agriculture apprentice for four months of the 2013 spring growing season. The general responsibilities of the apprentice are to work directly under the supervision of the Farm Manager and Project Director, as a member of our farm crew. The gig is physically demanding farm work involving all aspects of our farm’s production. A once in a lifetime chance to live, work and learn on a farm. A farmer-in-training program for those who wish to gain experience with and knowledge of raising chemical-free vegetables, farm-based educational programming, and community building and outreach.

The apprentice is expected to carry out farm tasks including but not limited to: sowing, transplanting, weeding, greenhouse work, farm maintenance, harvesting, some animal husbandry, and working with volunteers, the CSA program, and farmers market. Farm living is communal, there will be at least 4 other CFP residents during your time with us.

Dates of Apprenticeship:
March 11th- July 13, 2013

Working Hours:
March-April 7:00am – 4:00 pm (one hour lunch)
May-July 6:00am – 3:00 pm (one hour lunch)

Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day; 2 Saturdays per month (Saturdays include loading and unloading of truck, market delivery, market set-up and take-down, inventory & daily harvest). After working a Saturday, apprentice will have the following Monday off.

Lunch: Meal prep and cooking responsibilities are on a rotating calender. Everyone takes turns cooking. Cook of the day will be allowed to leave the fields an hour before lunch in order to prepare a meal.

***Texas gets hot, we will extend the lunch break on days the temperature exceeds 100F.***

Work Requirements:
-Must be confident/able to drive a standard transmission.

-Eager to work outdoors in a variety of weather, properly equipped.

-Ability to work with groups of children and adults, and alongside volunteers.

-Must be a self-starter, at times must work independently with minimal supervision.

-Lift at least 40 lbs.

-Willingness to handle compost, soil, mud, manure, and occasionally animals such as livestock or insects.

Terms of employment: This is a full time, residential position. A stipend of $150/week is provided. Food provided includes: seasonal produce and eggs from the farm when available and bulk dry goods. Housing accommodations are rustic. There is no medical insurance provided and Cardo’s Farm Project does not obtain accident liability insurance. Obtaining coverage is the responsibility of the apprentice.
