The Greenhorns documentary film explores the lives of America’s young farming community, and shows how a new generation of agrarians are working to reverse negative trends in agriculture in favor of healthy food, local and regional foodsheds, and the revitalization of rural economies, one farm at a time. Followed by a question and and answer panel featuring real members of the farming community of Northwest Lower Michigan. Winter Indoor Farming – Thursday, February 16, 6:30 to 8:30pm, Bellaire Community Hall 202 North Bridge Street, Downtown Bellare. A partnership of ISLAND and the Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference Learn what indoor farming is, and how you can begin farming next week! Paul Murray has been farming wheatgrass and other sprouts indoors for over five years, and is a familiar face at farmer’s markets around northern Michigan. This workshop will cover all the materials you’ll need, where to get them, as well as how to plant, grow, and harvest your crops. Beekeeping Basics: Info Session Saturday, February 18 1:00 to 4:00pm Grand Traverse Conservation District 1450 Cass Road, Traverse City. A partnership of ISLAND, the Grand Traverse Conservation District and the Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference. With support from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Lead by local beekeepers Yvonne Stephens and Heather Miller, this is an introduction to the resources you need to begin this relaxing and compelling hobby. The info session will cover essential tools and equipment, how to obtain bees, basic bee care, ideal hive location, foraging plants, and more.
