Farming Opportunities in Reno, Nevada Two Positions: Farm Manager and Farm Intern Start Date: Farm Manager - June Farm Intern - March/April Type: Full-time, Seasonal The River School Farm is looking for enthusiastic, organized and multi-skilled individuals to fill the positions of Farm Manager and Farm Intern. The River School Farm is a venue for year-round farming, special events and educational programs that demonstrate a holistic approach to sustainable living, bioregional design and creative expression. We grow fruit, vegetables, flowers, herbs, raise poultry and keep bees. Our farm is located alongside the Truckee River where the Great Basin meets the Sierra Nevada mountains in Reno, NV. We specialize in growing greens and root crops year round in hoop houses, low tunnels, and row covers and also grow warm season crops throughout the summer. We grow on our farm site and also develop and maintain other garden sites throughout the community. We manage a CSA program and sell a variety of value added products. Our farm provides food for families, restaurants and special events and the River School Farm serves as an educational facility with a mission to teach and demonstrate to others in our community how to grow healthy foods year round. Farm Manager Position

The ideal candidate has several years experience working in small scale sustainable agriculture. We are looking for someone who is knowledgeable in organic farming practices and permaculture principles and is open to exploring alternative methods of growing food.Job duties will cover a broad range of farm tasks including:- garden design and building
– crop rotation management and planning
– cover cropping
– seedling production
– biological disease and pest control
– CSA management
– crop harvesting
– soil amendments
– farm composting
– farmers market distribution
– animal husbandry (chickens, ducks, bees, and Buckwheat – our pet goat)Desired qualifications are:

– 3-5 years experience in organic farming and/or gardening
– experience operating and repairing farm equipment
– experience managing farm operations
– good communication skills
– experience managing work crews and/or staff
– good work ethic and highly motivated to learn
– physically fit and able to lift up to 60 pounds and work in adverse weather conditions
– attention to detail and efficiency
– creativity and love for a sustainable lifestyle
– interest in teaching and developing gardening workshops
– desire to participate with children’s groups and other educational programming

This is a full-time position, with 40 hours required weekly including some weekend duties based on the needs of plant and animal life-cycles. Housing is provided in the form a small private bunkhouse with bathroom and kitchen. Fresh garden produce is available seasonally. Salary will be based on experience.

Farm Intern Position

This position is ideal for someone who wants to gain practical work experience working in small scale urban sustainable agriculture. We ask for a 2-3 month commitment internship (housing and a modest living stipend are provided). Our ideal candidate would be interested in taking on the paid position of Farm Manager or Farm Staff beginning in June.

Farm work will expose interns to a broad range of farm tasks including:
– garden design and building
– crop rotation planning
– cover crops
– seedling production
– biological disease and pest control
– assisting with CSA management
– crop harvesting
– soil amendments
– farm composting
– farmers market distribution
– animal husbandry (chickens, ducks, bees, and Buckwheat – our pet goat)

Desired qualifications are:

– previous experience in farming and/or gardening
– good work ethic and highly motivated to learn
– physically fit and able to lift up to 60 pounds and work in adverse weather conditions
– attention to detail and efficiency
– creativity and love for a sustainable lifestyle
– interest in teaching and developing gardening workshops
– desire to participate with children’s groups on an occasional basis

This is a full time position, with 40 hours required weekly. Internship housing consists of a private room with shared bathroom and kitchen. 2 meals/day are provided mid-week along with fresh garden produce. Weekly stipend is $80/week.

The internship has the potential to develop into a full time position at the River School Farm and preference will be given to candidates who are interested in making a long-term commitment to our farm.
