Farm Internship in Minnesota on Green Compass Farm in Chatfield.  May – October, 2021

About Green Compass Farm:

I have had a small successful business selling produce at farmers markets since 1999 in SE Minnesota. My family and I grow a variety of produce on an acre of land. I have never used chemical herbicides or pesticides. In the last few years we have been growing oyster mushrooms and wine cap mushrooms for the market as well. Our specialties at the Rochester market are gourmet mushrooms, premium garlic, vegetable plants, gluten-free baked goods, cucamelons, pole beans, cilantro, greens and heirloom tomatoes. I am a certified homeopath, so this year there will be more application experiments using homeopathy for plant health. Also, new this year, is experimentation with growing Lion’s Mane mushrooms. There are 2021 plans for 80 acres of the farmstead to be seeded in prairie.

Description of the Farm Internship in Minnesota:

This internship will have a diversity of tasks and some flexibility depending on your interests, however, everyone needs to weed sometimes. Some tasks are maintaining mushrooms, transplanting, harvesting vegetables, harvesting cultivated mushrooms, selling at market, documenting use of homeopathy, prepping on-line orders etc. The Intern is expected to work an average of 28-35 hours a week (some weeks there is less work and some there is more). The intern would have an opportunity to take on projects and get a percentage of sales from the projects. An example would be to seed, plant and grow peppers and then get a percentage of the sales.

Learning/educational opportunities:

You will get experience in cultivating oyster, lion’s mane & wine cap mushrooms. You will get experience on the basics of seed starting, transplanting and maintenance of plants. There are educational opportunities about vegetable varieties and growing conditions. It will be a great chance to learn about homeopathy and how to implement it with plants. It’s an opportunity to learn about selling at a medium-sized market.
