Silverwood Organic Farm is an established Community Supported Agriculture farm providing for 200+ members.  It is situated on over 100 acres of owned and leased land, including 10+ cultivated acres, in Sherborn, Massachusetts - a small town in the western suburbs of Boston. The fields are historic Massachusetts farm land and the Farm continues a tradition of providing for the surrounding community that dates back over 300 years.  The Farm’s newly built traditional post and beam barn includes heated farm offices and a fully equipped kitchen for farm employees.  In addition, the Farm owns newly purchased tractors and farm equipment.

The mission of Silverwood Organic Farm is to provide farm shares of locally, certified organic, sustainably grown produce direct to consumers using the Community Supported Agriculture model.  Silverwood Organic Farm is completely dedicated to providing for its CSA members, with 2012 membership at 200+.  The Farm is solely focused on the CSA model and does not have other methods of distribution such as farm stands and farmers’ markets.

Farm Manager Position

Required qualifications include:

Three to five years experience as a Farm Manager for a CSA operation including a working knowledge of organic and sustainable growing principles. A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably a Masters degree, in Agriculture or a related field. Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans for future growth. Experience in managing farm budgets and optimizing labor, equipment, and operating costs. Track record in developing and implementing successful membership acquisition marketing campaigns. Experience in share delivery operations to off-site locations. Knowledge and ability of running successful volunteer days and farm events. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Must operate the farm with enthusiasm, motivation, professionalism, and versatility.

The Farm Manager is responsible for all aspects of operating and maintaining the farm, and will be responsible for most business operations, supervising a seasonal workforce, and participating in fieldwork.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

Farm Planning and Operations:  Developing an operational plan and budget for the farm; planting, cultivating, harvesting, and processing of seedlings to mature fruits; greenhouse propagation, maintain field records, rotations, and crop harvests; wash, pack, and load produce with farm crew; operating machinery; ordering supplies; tending crops; maintaining and monitoring land use and crop yield; developing an integrated pest management plan; developing and implementing effective irrigation plans, managing maintenance and repair of all facilities and equipment; complying with USDA certified organic regulations, protecting the environment and maintaining biodiversity

Farm Membership Growth:  Marketing the farm’s products and programs; membership acquisition, development of delivery operations, farm-to-business growth, vendor partnerships, developing and implementing year round share options

Leadership and Supervision:  Hiring and supervision of seasonal farm crew; effective and collaborative planning, communication, and meetings with Owners
