Homestead Dreams is an entry-level workshop designed to help you incorporate small-scale sustainability and self-sufficiency into your life. Whether you own or rent a home, or live in a rural or urban setting, you can move towards self-reliance now.

Build Observation Skills & Land Literacy

Learn about the typical farm and homestead in Western NC. This workshop is excellent if you’re in the beginning and exploratory stages of land-based living, particularly is you are incorporating agriculture, renewable energy, green building, land planning, hand-made products, and land-based living of all kinds into your lifestyle.

We cover common-sense, relevant information to help maximize your independence; increase your connection to community, place, and self; and plan out your dreams for the next 1–5 years.

Homestead Dreams: Panelists

Homestead Dreams includes a panel of local homesteaders and a regional expert on soil, climate, rainfall, typography, vegetation, wind, and how that affects and determines life, farming, and building in our region.

Alex Mingus

Alex Mingus and raised in North Minneapolis and is now a resident of South Minneapolis, very near the 3rd precinct, in a duplex with his mom living on the first floor and his wife and 3 of their kids living upstairs. He has been gardening for 9 years, and learning and experimenting with Korean natural farming inputs to feed his soil for the past 4 years, which has proven to be very fruitful. He grows legal hemp and some veggies in his backyard a larger plot where he grows vegetables for a small CSA.

Chloe Lieberman

Chloe Lieberman and her family tend a diverse homestead/farm where they raise about 80% of their food. She is a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and a cook. She sees food and nutrition as a day-to-day opportunity to remember the mutual reciprocity that exists between humans and the living world.

Cindy Trisler

Cindy raised three children on a homestead in the Midwest without running water or plumbing. She now resides in Madison County, NC on a small homestead called Mudluscious Pottery and Farm. There she runs an Air BnB, cooks everything from scratch, tends the gardens including chickens and mushrooms, and provides wonderful products weekly to customers.

Land Based Living Workshop Instructors

Lee Warren

Lee Warren is the Executive Director of Organic Growers School; the co-founder, designer, and builder, of an off-grid, sustainably-built CoHousing Neighborhood at Earthaven Ecovillage; founder and manager of Imani Farm, a 5-acre pasture-based cooperative farm; and co-founder and managing partner of the School of Integrated Living which teaches organic food production, regenerative systems, and community living. She’s been homesteading for more than 20 years.

Brandon Greenstein

Brandon Greenstein is the Home-Grower Program Director for Organic Growers School, developing new initiatives to provide services to home-growers. His background is in renewable systems, earth works, energy, water, and permaculture. He provides consulting, design and technical services for the creation of integrated systems. Brandon has been homesteading, including off-grid living and food production, in the western NC mountains for 20 years.
