Harvesting Local Food Opportunities

In fact, in the past two weeks, USDA awarded approximately $40 million in grants to support the development of local and regional food economies and community based solutions to food insecurity. Of the $40 million, $28 million was awarded through the Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program (FMLFPP), over $7 million through Community Food Project grants (CFP) and just under $5 million through the Food Safety Outreach Program (FSOP)… 

Filling the Local Food Gaps in the Farm Bill 

A new bill in Congress, aimed at shaping the 2018 Farm Bill, attempts to address some of these obstacles by increasing investments in local food infrastructure, helping farmers reach new local markets, and expanding access to local food for low-income communities. The Local Food and Regional Market Supply Act (The Local FARMS Act) was introduced this week by Sherrod Brown (D-OH) in the Senate, and Representatives Chellie Pingree (D-ME), Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) and Sean Maloney (D-NY) in the House…   



Land Tenure Provision Provides Opportunities for Current and Future Farmers 

For producers enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Land Tenure Provision provides an opportunity to bring land back into production and give a hand up to the next generation. The Land Tenure Provision, which is only available for the least environmentally sensitive CRP acres, incentivizes producers to transfer (by sale or a lease to own transaction) acreage they want to remove from the program to a beginning or socially disadvantaged producer…
