New Entry Field Training: Composting, 8.26.2010, Massachusetts

Please join the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project in the fields on Thursday, August 26th in Dracut, MA for a training on composting. The training will take place from 4 - 6 pm at Smith Farm, 300 Jones Avenue. Details: The Field Training will begin at 4:00 pm and will end at approximately 6:00 pm. The cost for each field training is $15, free for New Entry graduates. Composting is an important aspect of nutrient management on any farm.  At this workshop, we will discuss the beneficial role of compost in your soil, how compost is formed in a healthy compost pile, and some basic composting systems that are ideal for small farms.  We will go over the basic science of composting as well as the thought process behind designing your own system.

DIRECTIONS TO SMITH FARM, Dracut, MA: 300 Jones Avenue, Dracut, MA 01826

FROM BOSTON OR EAST: Route 93: Take Rt. 93 North to exit 46, Rt. 110/113 Methuen/Dracut. At the exit, circle the rotary and follow Rte 113 WEST to Dracut. Follow Rte 113 West approximately 5 miles.  At a light you will see Jones Avenue on your right and Wheeler on your left.  Turn right on Jones Avenue and continue about a half mile to Smith Farm on your right.  There is a small sign at the driveway entrance that says “The New Entry Sustainable Farming Project.”  Take a right on the driveway and continue until the road curves to the right, at which point you can park.

FROM WEST and SOUTH:

Take 495 to the Lowell Connector, drive to the end of the Connector (Exit 5C). Turn left onto Gorham Street and continue north to a split, bearing right towards Bridge Street. Cross the bridge. After approximately 2 miles, you will see the Market Basket plaza on your right, take a right at the next stoplight onto Rte. 113.  Continue approximately 1 mile until a light where you will see Jones Avenue on your left and Wheeler on your right.  Turn left on Jones Avenue and continue about a half mile to Smith Farm on your right.  There is a small sign at the driveway entrance that says “The New Entry Sustainable Farming Project.”  Take a right on the driveway and continue until the road curves to the right, at which point you can park.

FROM LOWELL: Get onto Bridge Street from downtown towards Dracut. After approximately 2 miles, you will see the Market Basket plaza on your right, take a right at the stoplight at Rte. 113. Continue approximately 1 mile until a light where you will see Jones Avenue on your left and Wheeler on your right.  Turn left on Jones Avenue and continue about a half mile to Smith Farm on your right.  There is a small sign at the driveway entrance that says “The New Entry Sustainable Farming Project.”  Take a right on the driveway and continue until the road curves to the right, at which point you can park.

PARKING: At the farm site, please park to the left of the driveway before it begins to curve to the right to enter the growing fields.
