Opportunity: New York City Foodshed Poster Collaboration

The Commons Brooklyn and the Foodshed market are calling on artists, activists, educators and community members to help generate a series of posters that will spread knowledge and inspire action about the emerging local food system. What is your vision of New York City’s regional food system in ten years? Fifty? How would it work ideally? How will we get there? What are the key issues that we need to dedicate ourselves to? What is missing from the conversation? Create a poster that visualizes the creation of a vibrant, equitable and sustainable food system for New York City and its region. Consider individual elements such as ideal planting methods, greener transportation, fair labor practices, or create a vision of an entire new system. This is a great chance to create powerful art that speaks to both city-dwellers who need and want healthy and delicious food; and the farmers and artisans who want to grow, produce and sell that food at fair wages and prices. We seek entries from anybody who is creative and passionate about food and justice—art students, farmers, designers, gardeners, schoolchildren, educators, policy wonks, you.

Foodshed is a new, indoor farmers’ market held every Sunday at The Commons Brooklyn. The market offers fresh, regional food while also financially supporting The Commons community and educational center. The Foodshed exists not just to sell delicious, organic food, but also to pose questions and voice proposals about how to build a new food system that is sustainable, healthy and accessible to all. The selected posters will be displayed in the market to inspire a smarter and healthier food system.
