Organic Farm Internships in Michigan
Organic Farm Internships in Michigan at Lake Divide Farm

General Description: Lake Divide Farm is named for the unique way the Huron and Upper Grand watersheds divide the property in half. It is located in Jackson county, Michigan on 54 acres of open and wooded land. We grow vegetables and fruit on 5 acres and sell primarily at farmers’ markets. We use organic practices and will be getting certified this year. We are dedicated to using the most sustainable and ecologically sound available to us. We are always learning and looking for sounder practices with the long term health of our ecosystems and communities in mind. To find out more about us visit our website or facebook page.

This is our first year growing in Michigan. For the past four years, we operated Whistling Wolf Farm in Hunterdon county, New Jersey. To get a broader picture of our ideals, feel free to visit www.whistlingwolffarm.com or Whistling Wolf Farm’s facebook page.

Educational Opportunities: There is no substitute for hands-on experience and interns at Lake Divide will gain plenty! This is an excellent opportunity for someone considering farming as a career because it offers involvement and discussion of all aspects of the business as well as a chance to experience the cadence of the growing season. Interns will also work directly with the farm owner/operators Helen and Jim, providing a chance for discussion and to ask as many questions as they can think of. As the season progresses, the reasons for farm choices (varieties, timings, cultural practices etc) will be discussed and clarified. Interns will have access to all educational materials in our library and are invited to take an active role in their farm education. We will provide direction to materials and resource that will help interns gain an in-depth understanding of their choice of topics. At the end of the seasons, interns will be invited to participate in a season-end review of the farm where we will discuss successes and failures and lay groundwork for changes to made for following year.
