Organic Farm Job In Michigan, 2013

Michigan Farm FamilyJob: Isadore Organic Farm in Michigan is hiring for the 2013 growing season. Isadore Farm is a successful, small scale, certified organic farmers market and wholesale vegetable farm. It’s located just north of Cedar in the heart of beautiful Leelanau County, Michigan. The farm lies five miles from Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and 15 miles from Traverse City, Glen Arbor, Empire etc. The location combines ample opportunities for outdoor fun with the best of small town life. The owners, Matt and Carissa Visser made the transition from gardeners to market farmers five years ago, creating a home and a farm from an open piece of property, while interning at established local farms. They are young, hard working and enthusiastic about feeding their community. Their goal is to create a sustainable, reasonably-sized farm and a positive place to work.

Isadore Farm has been certified organic by MOSA since its inception in 2009. The farms primary focus is on growing a wide variety of vegetables. In addition to vegetables they grow transplants for sale at markets in the spring. In peak season they sell at four farmers markets per week in addition to delivering produce to their local food co-op and select restaurants. They pride themselves in growing the finest food possible both in flavor and beauty, with an emphasis on quality, dependability, and attention to detail. For photos and more information on their farm please visit their website. (www.isadorefarm.com)

Their needs:

– Their ideal intern or employee is someone who is energetic, eager to learn about organic farming, loves food and who is excited to engage in their local food system.

– They’re looking for 2 or 3 interns to work from May through the end of October. Hours will vary, with less hours/week in the spring and fall and more hours in the summer. Maximum hours/week for each intern will most likely be around 35-40 hours/week.

– They’re also looking for part time employees for the months of July, August and September (roughly).

– Schedule flexibility is very helpful.

– Applicants must have their own transportation and housing.

– They need hard workers. Farming requires heavy lifting, repetitive physical work, and working outdoors in all types of weather. Applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds, be able to work standing in their barn, and be able to work crouching or kneeling in the field.

– Attention to detail in all aspects of work

– A positive attitude and a good sense of humor

– Dependability and punctuality

– Stamina – the ability to take care of yourself, and show up to work with energy over the course of the season.

– Customer service skills for the farmers market (not all employees will work at farmers markets)

– Experience is not necessary, but preference will be given to those with experience in small scale agriculture, working outdoors or working with produce.

What’s in it for you:

– Learn to farm – Interns will have the opportunity to learn as much as they’d like about all aspects of small scale organic agriculture including: preseason planning, greenhouse production, fertilizing, season extension, planting, cultivation, irrigation, harvest, prepping, direct marketing and storage.

– Learn to grow – Learn the ins and outs of the wide variety of crops that they grow. Even if you’re more interested in gardening than farming, you’ll certainly come away from working at Isadore Farm with a greater knowledge of how to grow beautiful, healthy produce.

– Get a realistic look at what it takes to own and operate a small farm.

– Earn an hourly wage.

– Eat lots and lots of amazing organic vegetables!

– Be an integral part of a team at a fun, positive and cooperative workplace.

– Experience a full growing season outdoors in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

– Take part in work that matters and be valued for your contribution.

– Work hard, eat well, have fun, go swimming.
