Organic Farmer Job in Massachusetts

Job: Race Brook Lodge, in Sheffield, Massachusetts is seeking a farmer to manage a half-acre farm and organic restaurant garden in southern Berkshire County for the 2014 growing season.

They’re looking for a knowledgeable and experienced grower who is mindful and self-motivated. The right person thrives when working both independently and in community and adapts proactively in dynamic situations. Responsibilities include all aspects of managing the farm, with lots of room for creativity and autonomy: growing vegetables, caring for animals, buying and selling supplies and produce, managing volunteers, distribution, keeping the books, etc. We have regular gatherings through the season and abundant volunteer help will be available, but also expect plenty of solitude and free reign. Opportunities to teach and participate in workshops will be available. Knowledge of permaculture is a plus. The position is salaried; hours will depend on the individual’s work style and the time of season. Begin in March, and see the farm through cleanup. The farm is set on beautiful land abutting state forest, with a nearby waterfall and direct access to the Appalachian Trail. They primarily grow vegetables for the adjacent restaurant and bed and breakfast. They are introducing chickens this spring, and would like to expand into more animal husbandry, beekeeping, and fruit trees. They’re openminded—bring your passions and expertise… Accommodations are a possibility for candidates from out of town.
