The Piedmont Environmental will be holding a Small Farm Development Course on March 30th, 2019 in Aldie, Virginia. Please consider joining this event.

What: Small Farm Development Course

Where: The Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows, Aldie, VA

When: First session begins March 30, 2019!

Do you dream of starting your own farm? Join farm manager, Dana Melby, and consultant, Ellen Polishuk, for a lively on farm course!

The Piedmont Environmental Council’s Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows will start production in 2019. At this time, the Community Farm has limited infrastructure (a driveway, fence, and a well). This provides a unique opportunity for beginning farmers to engage in discussing what is required to start a farm, from scratch!

The Small Farm Development Course will be structured as an on-farm consulting session between consultant (Ellen Polishuk) and farm manager (Dana Melby). The main sessions will focus on developing a vegetable farm with a bonus session in June with Andrew Crush at Spring House Farm for those interested in incorporating livestock production.

Topics will include:

  • designing farm layout with the future in mind,
  • implements and machinery,
  • production planning,
  • reclaiming land from overgrowth/invasive species while maintaining topsoil, and
  • evaluation and management of soils

Registration: $100/ entire course (4 half-day sessions + 1 bonus session). Limited to 20 registrants.

The Piedmont Environmental Council’s Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows will be getting off the ground in 2019. Starting in the spring, we will be producing a variety of vegetables (potatoes, broccoli, squash, etc) in order to provide a consistent supply of fresh produce to area food banks and pantries throughout the growing season. In addition to our production goals, we will be hosting a variety of educational programs and events. We will rely heavily on volunteer help, stay tuned for more details!
