Submit your food and farming stories to Creative Nonfiction

Creative Nonfiction is currently seeking true stories incorporating or involving food for an upcoming issue.  We’re looking for stories from a variety of viewpoints, and we are hoping you will help us reach your readers, colleagues, and other interested individuals.

For the past 16 years, Creative Nonfiction has devoted itself to publishing vividly written literary nonfiction on a variety of topics. We’ve recently transformed from literary journal to quarterly magazine–the “new” CNF features updated style and content, including long-form essays, columns on craft, author interviews, and much more.

Essays for this issue should be true stories that involve food in some way; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with an element of research and should reach for some universal or deeper meaning. We’re looking for well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice.

Submission guidelines: essays should be unpublished, 5,000 words or less, postmarked by September 3, 2010, and clearly marked “Food” on both the essay and the outside of the envelope. There is a $20 reading fee (or send a reading fee of $25 to include a 4-issue CNF subscription); multiple entries are welcome ($20/essay) as are entries from outside the U.S. (though subscription shipping costs do apply). Please send manuscript, accompanied by a cover letter with complete contact information (address, phone, and email), SASE and payment to:

  1. I run into stories often as I do research. I’ll be sure to send you the link next time I do.

  2. Do they pay people to write? At this point in my career I am looking to be paid vs. paying someone to publish a piece that draws readers.
    Thank you.
