Summer Program Facilitator and Summer Program Intern: Applications Due June 14th About Added Value Added Value is a non-profit organization promoting the sustainable development of Red Hook by nurturing a new generation of young leaders.  We work towards this goal by creating opportunities for the youth of South Brooklyn to expand their knowledge base, develop new skills and positively engage with their community through the operation of a socially responsible urban farming enterprise. About Our Summer Youth Program In Added Value’s seven-week Summer Youth Program, participants work each day on our 2.5-acre urban Farm and in the community. We will be also working on our new farm site on Governors Island. Working under the supervision of our staff, and youth leaders, new participants develop a strong sense of self and community while learning the skills necessary to grow food from seed to sale. Additionally, youth participants are introduced to the social context of our work, the food system, issues of community wellness, and social justice.

Summer Program Facilitator Job Description:
The Summer Program Facilitator will join Added Value staff, Youth Leaders, and Interns in facilitating our Summer Youth Program.  In this program, approximately 25 to 30 Brooklyn teens are employed to grow food from seed to sale, and are introduced to urban agriculture and the intersections of food, health, and social justice.  The Summer Program Facilitator will work along side an AV staff member to manage the implementation and evaluation of daily programming—leading teens in farm work and community-building activities.

This position is an intensive two-month commitment, Tuesdays through Saturdays from June 28th through August 25th, 2010.  This is a 40-hour per week position. Summer Program Facilitator Responsibilities will include:

·          Work intensively with AV Staff  to support a small group of interns

·          Provide daily supervision, support, community building, and community norms management for 25-30 youth participants

·          Deliver farm training and supervise farm work

·          Co-facilitate workshops and activities

·          Attend weekly meetings with staff and interns

·          Co-facilitate daily preparation and reflection with staff

Summer Program Facilitator Minimum Qualifications:

·          Experience working with youth, especially in urban agriculture, food justice, and/or community building settings

·          Knowledge about youth empowerment

·          Strong communication skills

·          Self-motivated and able to work within a fluid environment

Summer Program Intern Job Description:

The Summer Program Intern will have the opportunity to develop skills in urban agriculture, teamwork, facilitation and leadership, and will be encouraged to pursue additional individual learning goals while working within a supportive, energetic community.

The internship is an intensive two-month commitment, Wednesdays through Saturdays from June 28th through August 25th, 2010.  This is a 35-hour per week position.  Compensation will be based on experience. Added Value will also gladly help students receive school credit for this position. Responsibilities will include:

·          Work directly with Youth Participants on the Farm by facilitating farm work and community-building activities (in partnership with Added Value Staff, Youth Leaders, and other Interns)

·          Motivate, encourage, and support 25 to 30 youth participants in what may be their first work experience

·          Bring positive energy to the work

·          Participate in daily prep and evaluation

·          Setup and cleanup of materials and site

·          Dependable attendance

Minimum Qualifications
·          Experience working with youth

·          Interest in, and willingness to learn about, farming and food justice

·          Strong communication skills

·          Self-motivated and able to work within a fluid environment
