Sustainable Agriculture Apprenticeship Program Overview

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems’ Sustainable Agriculture Apprenticeship Program is seeking highly motivated individuals from a variety of different backgrounds to participate in a hands-on work and study program that trains participants in many aspects of sustainable agriculture production and research.

Apprenticeships are offered in several different focus areas; apprentices apply to the specific apprenticeship that best fits their skills, interests, and goals. The 2019 Sustainable Agriculture Apprenticeships are being offered at CEFS’ Field Research, Education, and Outreach Facility at Cherry Research Farm in Goldsboro, NC and at the NC State University Agroecology Education Farm in Raleigh, NC.  Apprenticeship appointments are for six months with a flexible start date between March and May 2019.

During that time, Apprentices will have the opportunity to:

  • Immerse oneself in agricultural production and field research, spending up to 40 hours a week as an integral part of a team
  • Work with a highly diverse team of educators from North Carolina State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services
  • Interact with other Apprentices at various research units and sites
  • Participate in field trips to local farms

Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather (cold, heat, humidity, rain, pollen)
  • Ability to work on repetitive tasks
  • Ability to work well in a team as well as individually
  • Good communication and organizational skills

CEFS’ Sustainable Agriculture Apprenticeship Program Offers:

Apprentices receive $8.00/ hour. (All applicable payroll taxes apply). There is no meal plan or food stipend. Apprentices must have their own transportation.  Housing may be available near the farm for a small monthly fee.
