Sustainable Farming Internship in New Jersey

Sustainable Farming Internship

Poplar Wood Farm is a 15 acre, family run farm located in the Warren County, NJ town of Port Murray, where we grow vegetables, flowers, herbs and eggs using organic methods with a focus on sustainability and unique varieties. Our organic growing methods rely on the use of cover cropping, compost, beneficial insects, and other environmentally conscious ways of growing our crops. We don’t use any chemical or synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and no GMO seed. We attend six farmers markets in northern New Jersey and have a CSA program that is currently entering its sixth season.

We are currently seeking interns to become team members for the 2016 season to assist with all aspects of production and distribution. Tasks may include greenhouse production, transplanting, direct seeding, cultivating, harvesting, packing, animal husbandry, irrigation and farmers’ markets. Positions are available for various start and end dates between March and December.

We recognize the important role our interns serve and strive to reciprocate their efforts by offering a strong learning experience. Our farm is growing and this is an exciting time to become involved. Interns will be given a large amount of responsibility and develop the skills necessary to contribute to the operation of an organic farm. We strongly encourage interns to return for a second season to continue to develop and take on greater responsibility. Interns will work directly with Al Esposito, who has over 25 years of agricultural and organic farming experience and is a Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ) and Foodshed Alliance board member.

All applicants are expected to have the ability and willingness to work long hours outside in all weather conditions. We seek individuals that are enthusiastic, have a great work ethic, and a desire to learn sustainable/organic methods. Farming is both physically and mentally demanding and applicants should be fully committed to meeting these challenges. Must be able to lift 50 pounds but previous agricultural experience is not required.

Interns are paid and receive a share in our CSA program. Housing is not provided but we offer assistance identifying housing near the farm.

To apply, please send a resume and letter of interest to poplarwoodfarm@gmail.com. In your letter please include a description of any prior work experience, explanation of your interest in our farm, and note dates of availability.
