Urban Farm Manager Job in NY at VINES in Binghamton – Fall 2020

Position Start Date: Mid-late September. The incoming Urban Farm Manager will overlap with the exiting Urban Farm Manager.
Employment Terms: This is a full-time, exempt, year-round position with hours averaging 35 hours per week over the year. Hours vary based on the season – see attached for tentative 2021 schedule.
Salary & Benefits: $15.50. Paid vacation, holiday, and sick time. Health Insurance offered.
 
VINES is Binghamton, NY based organization committed to developing a just and sustainable food system through community gardening & urban agriculture. We are looking for a farmer to fill our Urban Farm Manager position. The right person should be ready to take on the full management of 4 acres of urban & periurban farmland, should be passionate about sustainability and food justice, and should enjoy working alongside & teaching teenagers and volunteers. Binghamton is an extremely affordable community to live in, has the benefits of an urban city center in close proximity to a beautiful rural landscape with a lot of outdoor activities, and was recently named “the fifth-best Northeast city to live in after the coronavirus pandemic”. Binghamton is home to Binghamton University and is located in the Southern Tier of New York, along the border of PA and is 3.5 hours to NYC, 1 hour to Syracuse & Ithaca, and 2.5 hours from Albany.

Urban Farm Manager Job in NY – Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and plan all aspects of production, sales and donation of produce for BUF and CHOW including seed selection and ordering, crop rotation planning, fertility management, cover crop management, greenhouse management, irrigation, cultivation, management of perennial crops, harvest and transport of crops to storage;
  • Oversee finishing touches of the expansion of BUF from half acre to 2.5 acres and general site maintenance for both the Urban Farm and CHOW Farm.
  • Communicate regularly with the Farm Share Manager regarding CSA share contents, feedback from Farm Share members and other things related to coordinating share distribution;
  • Oversee the creation of a weekly newsletter for Farm Share members during the duration of distribution of Urban Farm Shares with assistance from interns;
  • Manage existing and develop new marketing channels for BUF and CHOW produce;
  • Organize volunteer opportunities and workdays that allow community members to be engaged in both the urban farm and CHOW Farm;
  • Conduct community outreach and develop relationships with businesses and neighbors surrounding the Urban Farm to ensure the local community is connected to the Urban Farm and taking advantage of what it has to offer;
  • Coordinate with the YPM to supervise and coordinate interns, Program Assistant, volunteers and other staff as assigned;
  • Assist the YPM with supervising youth employees participating in the Grow Binghamton year round youth employment program and develop educational programming to teach youth about food production, food insecurity, local food initiatives and need for fresh, affordable food;
  • Assist with teaching workshops within the Green Thumbs workshop series which provides educational events for the public on the topics such as garden planning, seed starting, home composting, food preservation, and healthy cooking;
  • Oversee the creation and management of a more formalized system for planting, caring for and harvesting from fruit trees at the Urban Farm, Community Gardens, and other VINES spaces;
  • Develop partnerships/collaborations and provide technical assistance to community organizations to advance the missions of VINES;
  • Document and evaluate the impact of VINES programs;
  • Additional duties which may arise with new technologies or changes in Urban Farm systems;
  • Assist Executive Director in researching, identifying, and developing foundation and government grant proposals to support VINES initiatives and programs;
  • Manage grant reporting and compliance as assigned;
  • Assist the Board, ED and other staff with fundraising efforts for VINES;
  • Manage other special projects as assigned;
  • Prepare staff report on a monthly basis to the VINES Board of Directors.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in organic agriculture operations (including growing calendar development, greenhouse work, composting, and harvesting), CSA management, and knowledge in the topics of nutrition, sustainability, and community food systems is required;
  • Quick and independent learner that is not afraid to take on new project & teach themselves new skills;
  • Able to work weekends and occasional evenings;
  • Experienced in managing youth programming and supervising youth from diverse backgrounds;
  • Experienced in managing volunteers from diverse backgrounds;
  • Effective written and oral communicator;
  • Self-driven and able to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Able to work with people from a variety of ages, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds;
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills. Able to prioritize tasks for self and volunteers;
  • Exceptional relationship building skills;
  • Creative thinker and problem solver;
  • Teaching skills including developing and implementing age appropriate lessons and workshops on agriculture;
  • Proficiency using the internet and Microsoft Word and Excel required; experience with social media, WordPress, and Mail Chimp or similar platforms;
  • Successful project management skills;
  • Ability/willingness to participate in intense physical labor in all weather conditions.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to work overtime during growing season;
  • Valid driver’s license and experience driving large vehicles;
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
