CSA Farm Interns

CSA Farming Internships in North Dakota for 2016

Enjoy a truly unique experience to be a part of a young farm! If you’ve ever considered the life of a farmer, this is your chance to experience it without the risk. Plus, learn to grow in the challenging short growing season of the upper Midwest.

General Description: Forager Farm is a 100-member vegetable (some sourdough bread + eggs) CSA located in central North Dakota, a very rural place, but we are a thriving farm with plenty to do, explore, and learn. We are on a mission to revive our food culture by providing fresh, local, sustainable produce directly to our members. We believe people should have a relationship with their food, one that gives back to both you and the land.

2016 will be our 3rd season. We are not certified organic, but believe in transparent farming practices and being open and honest about all inputs used on our farm. We do not use any synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, or any genetically modified seed.

In addition to the CSA, we are part of the North Dakota Farm to School Program and deliver fresh vegetables to Jamestown Public School District August-October. We also sell to an amazing local cafe/restaurant, Terra Nomad Company and will be delivering to the soon-to-be-opened Bisman Community Food Co-op.

Number of Interns: 2-3

Minimum Length of Stay: We need a commitment of one full season, May-early November OR later in the season, August-November

Meals: Interns will have access to products from the farm, such as vegetables, eggs, honey and some meat. Some bulk dry goods will also be available. Interns are responsible for their own meals, however we do enjoy dining and cooking together and will occasionally share meals in our home.

Skills Desired: In addition to experience with growing food, we’re interested in candidates with the following skills (preferred, but not necessary): carpentry skills, small livestock management, experience cooking for large groups.

Educational Opportunities: You will be participating in a full CSA season in North Dakota, learning daily life on a farm as well as the necessary operations for direct to consumer farms. Chosen candidates must participate in the FARRMS Internship Program, an amazing opportunity that helps out local farms and creates a place of learning for those interested in sustainable farming in North Dakota. The FARRMS Internship Program provides beginning farmers and ranchers real world training in sustainable agriculture. Participants in the FARRMS internship program live and work full time on a host farm for an entire growing season, receiving ongoing instruction and learn in-depth skills unique to the host farmer’s operation. The goal of the FARRMS internship program is to prepare beginning farmers and ranchers with the fundamental skills and concepts of operating a successful farm.

Stipend: $800/month

Housing: Interns will live in our 35€™’ camper, complete with full kitchen, bathroom and one shared bedroom as well as open living spaces. We will be accepting 2-3 workers for the season, so keep in mind you will be sharing the space. Couples and/or close friends are welcome.

Internship Details: In addition to the vegetables we also have laying hens and a small trip of dairy goats that we will milk starting in April 2016. The milk is just for farm consumption at this time, but we are working towards a micro-goat dairy in the future. Duties include, but are not limited to: seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting/washing/packing CSA boxes twice weekly, help at deliveries, rotational grazing management of goats, milking goats, collecting/washing eggs, feeding goats and chickens, occasional tractor work, assisting on occasional building projects, etc.
