Biodynamic Vegetable Apprenticeship at Temple-Wilton Community Farm in Southern New Hampshire – 2021

About the farm: Located atop of Abbot Hill, in the town of Wilton of southern New Hampshire, Temple-Wilton Community Farm ranges over more than 130 acres of pasture, hayfields, vegetable fields, and woods. Biodynamic Vegetable Apprenticeship Details: We are seeking apprentices to join our vegetable crew for the 2021 growing season. This is a full-time apprenticeship that will cover the daily tasks of growing over 40 different vegetables and herbs on about 4.5 acres:

  • Greenhouse Management: Starting seedlings, irrigation, etc.
  • Sowing and transplanting in the field
  • Application of Biodynamic preparations and foliar sprays
  • Weeding, cultivation & pest management
  • Harvest & post-harvest handling of vegetables and herbs.

The majority of our work is done by hand. We apply Biodynamic and organic principles in managing the farm with a strong emphasis on building healthy, biologically active soil.

Learning experience: Learning is mostly done as hands-on experience. You will be involved in all aspects of growing many different vegetables and herbs from seed to harvest using Biodynamic and biological/organic methods. Though we don’t have a structured “curriculum”, you’ll have ample opportunities to ask questions and get answers depending on your interest.

Duration: Mid-April through October.

Skills and Attitude: Apprentices must be honest, open, respectful, and be ready to work hard while maintaining a positive attitude. Applicants need to be in good physical health and able to work hard in different weather conditions and various positions.

Work schedule: The workweek is generally Monday through Saturday. However, with a short season and unpredictable and unstable weather, flexibility to accommodate changes in the work schedule is required.

Compensation:

  • Housing: Private bedroom in a beautiful apartment with other farmworkers. The housing includes a shared kitchen, shower, and free access to WiFi.
  • Stipend: Monthly stipend of $1000.
  • Food: Access to all farm produced food.
