Farm Manager Job and Internships in Montana at Mill Crick Farm and Fourth Wave Farm – 2019
 
Seeking to fill farm manager job and internships in Montana on a 15 acre organic produce and cut flower operation.
 
Mill Crick Farm and Fourth Wave Farm are jointly managed by Lindsey Aull and Randall Mark in the Bitterroot Valley in Western Montana. We grow certified organic/transitional organic mixed vegetables and cut flowers on about 15 acres and 10,000 sq. ft. of high tunnels and alfalfa hay on around 20 acres. Applicant will work directly with the farm owners and must have 2-3 years prior experience working on vegetable farms.  
 
The right applicant has experience in wholesale and retail produce standards, is self motivated, pays attention to detail, has good time management, is a proficient record keeper, and has a good attitude.
During different parts of the season responsibilities will vary and a general understanding of commercial vegetable farming is necessary.  The position is salaried and pay depends on experience.  Pay will be at least $16,000 for 8 months but could be more.  Initially the position is from April through November but ideally would continue after that.  
 
Manager’s responsibilities will include:                           
  • Working with field crew weeding, transplanting, irrigation, and harvest
  • Supervising operation of our farmstand: stocking and shrinking produce, keeping inventory, cleaning, caring for a 20×24 greenhouse for bedding plant sales April thru end of June.
  • Operating our booth at the Hamilton Farmers Market:   setting up and take down, representing the farm and interacting with customers, having general knowledge of produce and plant starts, proficiency in adding and giving change
  • Overseeing and participating in pack house operations:  being familiar with produce marketability standards,facilitating efficient  washing, sorting, and packing produce for sale
  • Delivery: Doing deliveries around Western Montana.  Mostly within an hour of the farm but possibly one day a week that would be all driving.
 
Internship Positions:
 
We are currently seeking three interns for the 2019 growing season. For the three intern positions, we are looking for motivated individuals who enjoy working outside and have a desire to learn about farming.  
     
   Two intern positions are for the full season, mid April thru mid October.  One position is from June thru September, but is flexible to accommodate school scheduling. Work will include duties in the  greenhouse and field, including seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and processing/washing produce for sale.  We will be working in all weather, which will vary greatly over the course of the season. What we hope to provide through this internship is training in the skills and knowledge needed to work on/manage a farm including greenhouse management; field tillage and fertility management; equipment use and maintenance; plant production;wholistic farm planning and record-keeping.  We have working relationships with several area farms and interns will have the opportunity to visit other operations & interns over the summer through a program run by the Community Food and Agriculture Coalition in Missoula. 
 
We provide a stipend of $200 to $325 a week, housing, and food. The main farmstead where interns will be living is 2 miles up a bike path to the small town of Hamilton w/standard amenities and a couple miles from the base of Mill Creek Canyon, a popular hiking and rock-climbing spot in the Bitterroots.  The Bitterroot valley offers incredible outdoor recreation opportunities beyond the valley there are numerous other options to explore Montana over the summer.
 
Housing options available include a wall-tent with wood-stove, camper w/woodstove, or 18 ft. tipi w/woodstove. Separate kitchen, shower and washer available. Meals are on your own , however we provide anything the farm produces; primarily vegetables and meat. We look forward to sharing some group meals over the season.
