Farmland For Lease in Wisconsin – Farmland available for lease in Kenosha, Wisconsin at the Somers Farm and Prairie – 2020

The Somers Farm and Prairie is owned by the Heidi Family which stewards the land that includes both native and agricultural landscapes. The farm’s mission is to model sustainable partnerships between conservation and agriculture on this site in order to protect open spaces in Southeastern Wisconsin. The farm comprises approximately 100 acres of land east of the School Tributary and is in an ideal location for sustainable food production. It is located in the most populous region in Wisconsin, close to markets demanding fresh, local food. The farm’s unique position between two major metropolitan centers provides access to important markets and transportation corridors, making it ideal for continued food production. The Farm co-locates local farmers as stewards of the land, demonstrating a sustainable model of agriculture that is productive while also furthering conservation goals.

At the Somers Farm and Prairie, we believe that where open spaces are protected, productive farmland should be preserved in order to continue the production of food for urban populations. Farmland is rapidly being developed for residential and industrial purposes in southeastern Wisconsin. Preservation of the farm is of high importance thanks to its location on the School Tributary and in close proximity to other greenways in the Pike River Watershed. This location lays the groundwork for a thriving partnership between sustainable food production and conservation.

Leases are being accepted for initial 12-24 months for 5-30 acres. The Request for Proposals is on a rolling deadline with on farm operations starting Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. A limited number of acres can be certified organic, and the remaining are in transition. Organic farming is not a requirement for tenancy, but a stewardship plan for building soil fertility and sustainable management will be included in a lease.
