Upcoming Field Days and Farming Events in Future Harvest CASA’s Foodshed Field School – Fall 2019 in Maryland

9/11 Part-Time Farming on Small Acreage 1:00 – 4:00 pm at Mise en Place, Davidsonville, MD. 

Join us for a hands-on field day at J.J. Minetola’s quarter acre part-time farm operation being held as one of FH CASA’s Fall Field Days and Farming Events. From basement microgreens to high tunnels, a caterpillar tunnel, and a few outdoor vegetable beds, this farm has proven that small acreage can still mean big yields. Learn how to calculate costs of production, assess your needs for staff, and discuss the challenges and benefits of market proximity. 

This event is followed by a potluck meal – bonus conversation time with the farmer! Please bring a dish to share. Workshop sponsored by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Register soon – only a few spots left! $20 members; $40 non-members, Free for BFTP. Register HERE.

9/27 Setting up a Diversified Livestock Farm 1:00 – 5:00 pm at Porch View Farm, Woodbine MDJoin farmer and owner Keith Ohlinger for a tour of his livestock farm, where all of the animals are raised in an agroforestry setting, and a discussion on how to set up a new, diversified livestock operation. Maryland Extension agent Erika Crowl will be present to discuss resources and opportunities for new and existing farmers. $20 members; $40 non-members. Free for BFTP. Register HERE.

9/28 Cut Flowers: Advanced Annuals, Post-Harvest Handling, and Season Extension  1:00 – 4:00 pm at Masterpiece Flower Farm, Whaleyville MD. Learn to grow advanced annuals such as dahlias, ranunculus, and lisianthus. Special focus will be given to post-harvest handling practices. Will also discuss tips for season extension. Register soon – only a few spots left! $15 members; $20 non-members. 10/8 Honeybee Field Day 5:30 – 8:00 pm at the UMES Apiary, Prince Anne, MD. Learn the basics of keeping bees, the issues causing honeybee decline, and enjoy a honey tasting. 10/24 Woody Perennials for Cut Flowers 10:30 am – 12:30 pm at Butterbee Farm, Pikesville, MD. Join farmer and owner Laura Beth Resnick for a tour of Butterbee Farm’s 3-acre space, with special attention given to woody perennials. Learn how investing time and money into perennial plantings will pay off with heaps of foliage and blooms, and attract more designers and customers.Bring a dish to share and continue the discussion over a potluck style lunch with Laura Beth. $20 members; $40 non-members.
