Organic Vegetable AmeriCorps Opportunity in Virginia – 2019

High Rocks is an educational non-profit located in Pocahontas county, WV.  We are currently seeking full-time AmeriCorps members for the March 12-August 31 term.

These AmeriCorps members would engage students and volunteers from the local community, together they will learn and grow in the gardens, in the kitchen, in wellness and in entrepreneurship, for a hands-on education in organic vegetable production and preparation of healthy meals and snacks for summer camp.  You will be growing lettuce, carrots, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, kale, spinach, radishes, melons, basil, broccoli, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, beets, and other common vegetables, both for the camp kitchen and also for market, both in the high tunnel and in the outdoor garden at our spectacular mountain campground.  You will be mentoring students who are learning to grow these crops alongside you.  There is a distribution truck that will be coming through once a week to buy produce from the youth.

For the four weeks that camp is in session, you will be serving 10 hours a day, half the day in the kitchen, helping to turn this nutritious produce into healthy meals for our campers, and the other half harvesting and gardening with the campers.

Experience in vegetable production is not necessary, but a strong work ethic and teamwork attitude are required.  For the candidate with large-scale production experience, we will be expanding production to a ¾ acre plot to pilot training youth on a larger scale to start their own successful market garden businesses.

Monthly living allowance of $1,194 and an education award of $2,960 at the successful completion of service.  Please call 304 653-4891 if you have any questions, or visit our website to learn more:  https://highrocks.org/programs/in-our-communities/local-foods/
