Produce Exemptions from FSMA

Over the last year and a half, many produce farmers across the country have been preparing for and going through first time produce safety rule inspections. However, not every produce item on inspected farms is subject to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) regulations. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) exempted a list of produce items from the produce safety rule requirements, known as the “rarely consumed raw” list—but left out several important crops in the final rule. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) recommended several revisions to the rarely list to move forward with a potential remedy to address the gaps in the list.

Grassroots Leaders Present Appropriations Asks in Virtual Fly-In 

Each summer, NSAC brings dozens of farmer and rancher voices to Washington, DC for our annual fly-in lobby days. To recognize the importance of this grassroots advocacy work while also protecting the safety of farmer-leaders, we adapted to organize virtually this summer – our second virtual fly-in this year. In July, farmers and community leaders representing seven states shared stories and critical policy asks based on what’s occurring on the ground and the needs of their communities. Updated COVID-19 Resources

The coronavirus pandemic has presented enormous challenges to farmers, farm and food system workers, and consumers. The work of NSAC to help others continues to develop rapidly and includes a variety of constantly updated resources.
