Agriculture and Farm Hospitality Internship

Summer Agriculture & Farm Hospitality Internship at Jones Family Farms in Shelton Connecticut – 2020

Objective:

  • To offer college students the opportunity to learn about modern sustainable agriculture, direct marketing and ecology while earning a fair salary in a pleasant family farm environment.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Harvest supervisor for strawberry and blueberry crops
  • Harvest-Your-Own operations (cashier, field supervision, parking, customer service)
  • Agricultural duties (weeding, pruning, harvesting)
  • Farm educator
  • Other farm maintenance tasks, such as: cleaning, painting, produce box folding, farm kitchen duties (post-harvest handling, produce preservation and food preparation)

Qualifications:

  • Team player, positive attitude, outgoing personality
  • Strong communication skills
  • Good physical health: comfortable standing for 8 hours, able to lift 50 lbs, and to perform demanding work at a fast farm pace
  • Able to work in all weather conditions (including extreme heat and rain)
  • Sincere interest in learning about sustainable agriculture, conservation, and eating healthy/locally

Time Commitments:

  • Full-time summer commitment from May 20 to August 8 (apx. 400 hours over 12 weeks; weather/crop dependent)
  • Must work weekend and some evening hours, including holidays (such as Memorial Day and July 4th)
  • Strawberry season (June) – 6 day work weeks, with Sunday afternoons and one weekday off, as assigned by managers
  • Blueberry season (July/August) – 5 day work weeks, with Sundays and Mondays off
  • One 3-day weekend granted in July, as assigned by managers
  • Work days can start as early as 7:30am and can finish as late as 7pm (varies); typical shift is 8 hours

Educational Experiences:

  • Strawberry/Farm training before start of retail season (apx. 15 hours of structured lessons)
  • Blueberry/Summer Agricultural Work training in July (apx. 8 hours of structured lessons)
  • Project-oriented, on-the-job instruction on agricultural techniques, farm products, and direct marketing

Compensation Notes:

  • Pay is at an hourly rate and payroll is on a bi-weekly basis
  • Compensation relates to amount of work and dedication to the completion of summer farm work
  • Successful returning farm interns will have experienced job status and can be compensated as such
  • Retail clothing (t-shirts, caps) provided
  • Housing/Transportation is not provided
