Who We Are –

Bar Harbor Community Farm is a MOFGA certified, organic farm located seven miles from downtown Bar Harbor, ME on a fifty-acre parcel of land and one leased field.   This is our ninth year of production.  We grow over forty varieties of vegetables on four acres of land.  Each year we have brought more land under production and have expanded our markets.  The core of our market is a 125-member summer CSA, a 60-member fall CSA and an island-wide wholesale business.

Our mission is to produce top-quality, nourishing food for the local community, to build rewarding relationships with neighbors and customers, to prove economic viability for this enterprise, and to have fun.

Our infrastructure includes two high tunnels for in-ground production of tomatoes, basil, cucumbers and other vegetables, a 50 hp Kubota tractor with implements a 30-foot seedling greenhouse and a barn fitted with photovoltaics which power all electrical operations on the farm.

Bar Harbor is located on Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park. For anyone that enjoys biking, hiking, x-country skiing, sailing or kayaking, this is the place for you. With views of Cadillac Mountain from the farm, we are a short trip to Acadia. Free bus service is available on the island from the 3rd week of June until early October with a bus stop one half mile from the farm.

Assistant Farm Manager Job Responsibilities –

The individual hired for this position will work closely with two farm managers of Bar Harbor Community Farm. Our workday normally begins at 7:00 am.  We aim for an hour lunch break; but during extremely hot spells, we may break and then return later in the day when the temperature is cooler. This job is full time from May 1st to November 30th. During August, hours may increase to 50 hrs/wk.  If the individual is successful during the 2018 growing season, the job may be extended through the winter working part-time harvesting winter greens for our winter farmers market.

Spring work includes seeding, transplanting and watering in the seedling greenhouse, soil preparation work using both the Kubota tractor and hand tools, direct seeding in the field and transplanting into the field. Overseeing farm crew members and volunteers is also an aspect of this job.

Summer brings on the mulching, weed management, succession planting, irrigation, pest management and harvesting of crops. Once harvested, produce is transported to the washroom where it is cleaned, cooled and packed before delivery to our CSA market or wholesale market. Delivery occurs 2 days per week. Winter greenhouse production seeding begins in July and continues into early fall.

Other responsibilities include helping with loading and unloading deliveries, setting up for CSA distributions, equipment maintenance, hoop house construction, walk-behind tractor use, record keeping, maintaining orderly work spaces, keeping an eye out for improved efficiencies and perhaps most important, representing the farm to the public with an authentic enthusiasm for our customers.

Fall responsibilities include getting beds ready for winter, harvest, storage, winterizing, overwintering seeding and high tunnel management.
