Crop Manager Job at Easy Bee Farm in Moab, Utah – 2022

Easy Bee Farm is a three acre CSA and market farm in Moab, UT. Our team includes the Farm Owner, a Farm Manager, a farm hand, and 10-15 work trade volunteers. We have made our home in the Colorado Plateau bioregion in a high desert ecosystem. Our primary focus is on supporting the soil with regenerative farming techniques. Easy Bee Farm has been in operation for six years, and has increased our production and sales each year. We currently grow 40+ varieties of vegetables, have sizable orchards, and have a cut flower program. We serve a 50+ member CSA as well as market and restaurant sales. We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic farmer with strong leadership skills to join our team as a Crop Manager.

The Crop Manager is responsible for the day to day operation of the farm, alongside the Farm Manager.

Crop Manager Job Responsibilities Include:

  • A daily farm walk with an eye for harvesting, weeds, pests, problems, and cleanliness in order to prioritize farm tasks
  • Crop planning: crop selection, rotation, planting schedule, fulfilling a 50 member CSA program in addition to other sales
  • Planting: bed prep, direct seeding with seeders and by hand, greenhouse starting, transplanting
  • Crop maintenance: mulching, weeding, cultivating, hand watering germinating rows, maintaining drip irrigation, cover cropping, pest management
  • Harvesting: supervising the harvest, creating harvest lists, utilizing proper technique for harvesting, washing, and packing CSAs and restaurant orders
  • Overseeing 10-15 work trade CSA members in harvest, cleaning, and packing; developing training for workers
  • Managing a farm hand three days a week
  • Record keeping of crops, harvests, and sales
  • Communicating with restaurants for weekly sales, invoicing using QuickBooks
  • Other computer tasks: utilizing a collaborative to-do list in Google Docs, daily email check, weekly newsletter to CSA members, social media as needed
  • Safe and effective handling of machinery including ATV’s, BCS two wheel tractor, compact utility loader, tillers, seeders, shredders, and mowers
  • Other farm work in conjunction with the Farm Manager (irrigation, landscaping, building, maintenance, building, IPM, orchard management, tractor work, etc)

Job Requirements:

  • Previous leadership experience on a small-scale farm using organic practices
  • 3+ years of work experience on a farm with at least one of those years being in a leadership role
  • Experience working with a wide variety of crops
  • Familiarity with drip irrigation, IPM, and organic practices to build soil (composting, cover cropping, rotation, mulching, green manure)
  • Familiarity with farm equipment and machinery and their safe use
  • Ability to balance time management in self-directed and collaborative work, and to prioritize tasks efficiently
  • Strong communication and listening skills and a commitment to developing strong working relationships and problem solving with team members
  • The ability to adapt to changing conditions
  • The Crop Manager position is a full time, 40 hours a week position. Due to the nature of farming, flexibility with work schedules is required. We typically start the day before the sun, so we are up early (6:30 am) in the summer and later in the shoulder seasons. We rarely require weekend hours.

Compensation:

Starting $18-20/hr, depending on experience. Two weeks paid vacation. Other perks include a full CSA share, ample other produce when in excess, flowers, potential for on farm housing (to be discussed), and an engaged and supportive farm community.

Target start date:

Early to mid January. The incoming Crop Manager has the opportunity to be trained by the current Crop Manager in January and February.
